need bicycle recommendations

+1 on the recommendations to visit a decent LBS.

+1 on the recommendations to get properly fitted.

+1 on the recommendations to look into the hybrids, or, if you want to go over to dark side, the recumbents.

I have two -- a Giant TCR1 and a wally world Schwinn mountain bike. The Giant is a purebred and the Schwinn is a mongrel. Both have their strong suits. I like the Schwinn for the comfort, but the Giant is an effortless, mile eating ride.

No picture of the Schwinn but here's the Giant.

Generic pic, but this is what I bought. It's a Navigator 3.0, 24 speed, trigger shift, double wall rims and front suspension fork. Shimano and Bontrager components. Impressed with the quality of this bike.

You made a great choice. That bike will do anything you want. Enjoy it and get healthy:thumb

Dahon

The best bike is the one that makes you happy.

I have been through the mountain bike phase of my life (kid in town by the name of John Tomac made us all look slow) and tried a little road riding. Ended up with a Dahon folding bike.

It rides three times better than it looks. I can take the Dahon on vacation (Key West) and a lot of other places. It may not be for you but try to find something that will make you want to get out. Between the motorcycle and Dahon I have not had the car out in almost a week.

That's a good point. I have a Dahon, I keep it in the motorhome and I can't figure out why, but it does ride at least three times better than it looks. Smooth, comfortable and all around enjoyable!:clap

Great choice on the bike there, Mike. Ride and enjoy! You'll start feeling the benefits within days. :thumb

Just remember it is kind of like a motorcycle. If you start wearing all the get up and trappings you look normal standing next to the bike, but the further away you get from the bike the more you resemble an alien... :ha

Or so my wife tell me...

:brow Gotcha!

Trust me on the bike computer. If you're just getting going, you're going to want a tach for your heart. Watching the miles pile up and the calories burn off lends a certain sense of accomplishment, too.

I'm in Hawaii right now on Maui and have rented a bicycle. I've mapped a 55 miler for tomorrow followed by a 25 mile recovery ride on Friday.

Bicycles will give you a closer look at more of the country than you can achieve any other way beside a walk.

Thanks for the info. I'll look into that. Maui is a beautiful place and I plan on going back in the next few years.
