BMW Group records strong worldwide sales increase again in April
05/07/2008
Deliveries rise by 12.5% in the month under review
BMW grows by 11.6% and MINI by 17.5%
Over 485,000 vehicles worldwide already delivered for the year to April
Munich. The BMW Group once again continued its upward sales trend for all three car brands in April. Overall, in a month-on-month comparison, the company recorded a 12.5% increase in the number of vehicles delivered to reach a total of 133,205 (prev.yr.: 118,378). For the year to April, 485,155 BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce vehicles have been sold. This is an increase of 7.5% (prev.yr.: 451,311) compared with the same period in 2007.
For the BMW brand, sales rose in April 2008 by 11.6% to 111,654 automobiles (prev.yr. 100,062). For the year to April, 405,204 (prev.yr. 385,902/+5.0%) vehicles were sold. The main growth drivers are still the BMW 1 Series, the BMW 5 Series plus the BMW X5 and BMW 3 Series Coup?® and Cabrio. In April 2008, the strongest increase was recorded for the BMW 1 Series. The number of deliveries to customers rose by 97.5% to 19,719 automobiles (prev.yr.: 9,985). Of this, sales of 2,761 were recorded for the new BMW 1 Series Cabrio, which was only launched at the beginning of April, along with sales of 2,235 BMW 1 Series Coup?® models, available since the end of November. The BMW 5 series also made a gain in sales in the month under review. The number of deliveries of the 5 Series rose by 2.7% to reach 18,744 units (prev.yr.: 18,251). Demand for the new BMW X5, which has been available in Europe for a year, continues to be strong. Here, sales rose by 48.5% or 3,689 vehicles to reach a total of 11,289 units (prev.yr.: 7,600). 8,110 of the BMW 3 Series Coup?® were handed over to customers (prev.yr.: 6,819/+18.9%), and the BMW 3 Series Cabrio posted sales of 6,663 vehicles (prev.yr.: 5,188/+28.4%).
Sales of the MINI brand also continued to be very positive. In the month just past, 21,463 MINI were delivered to customers, 17.5% more than in April 2007 (18,264). For the year to April, 79,680 MINI were sold, which represents an increase of 22.1% (prev.yr.: 65,244).
Ian Robertson, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for Sales and Marketing: "We are and will remain strong in the market, and we will affirm our leading position in the premium segment this year with a series of new models. Despite the difficult economic conditions in some markets, we will continue to aim for new record sales levels for all three brands for the current business year. At the same time, we are making our fleet more and more environmentally friendly, which our customers appreciate. After having sold over 450,000 units with EfficientDynamics measures last year, we expect to sell over 800,000 BMW and MINI vehicles with this technology in Europe in 2008. This will continue to strengthen our competitive advantage by reducing fuel consumption and emissions throughout the entire fleet."
The BMW Group once again sold most of its vehicles in the European markets, where sales of 79,391 vehicles were recorded in April. This is an increase of 14.1% compared with the same month last year. In the American markets, the BMW Group increased its deliveries last month by 10.0% to reach 36,169 vehicles. In April 2008, the BMW Group sold a total of 31,448 BMW and MINI brand cars (prev.yr.: 28,692/+9.6%) in the USA, its largest single market, and was able to successfully maintain its position in the face of the negative overall trend in the market. The BMW M3, BMW X6 and BMW 1 Series and the MINI Clubman, which were all launched for the first time in the US market, had a positive effect on sales development.
The company is continuing to grow at above-average rates in Asia, where the number of automobiles delivered rose in April 2008 by 11.3% to 13,330 (prev.yr.: 11,982). The Chinese markets once again developed dynamically. Sales in April rose by 15.5% from 5,128 units to 5,921 units.
In Western Europe, sales rose by 13.8% to 75,191 automobiles (prev.yr. 66,068). Development in the German market was also very positive - the BMW Group was able to sell 30,638 vehicles here in April (prev.yr.: 23,991). This corresponds to an increase of 27.7%.
For Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, the number of deliveries rose in April by 69.2% to 88 (prev.yr.: 52) vehicles. For the year to April, 271 Rolls-Royce cars were sold, representing a 64.2% increase on the same period last year (165 cars).
Sales of motorcycles in April 2008 reached 12,489 vehicles (prev.yr.: 12,320/+1.4%). For the year to the end of April, 33,533 BMW motorcycles were delivered to customers (prev.yr.: 35,348/-5.1%).

BMW straight six-cylinder engine with Twin Turbo defends its title of "International Engine of the Year".
05/07/2008
Munich / Stuttgart. With six awards for five engines gained at this year's "International Engine of the Year Awards", BMW has successfully defended its position as the world's leading manufacturer of efficient high-performance power units. For the second time in succession, the 3-litre straight six engine with Twin Turbo and High Precision Injection has won the overall ranking in this most significant international engine competition. The 225 kW/306 bhp engine employed in the BMW 3 Series, the BMW 1 Series Coupe and Convertible, as well as in the new BMW X6, also has repeated last year's victory in the 2.5 to 3-litre engine category.
Only one engine had previously ever succeeded in repeating overall victory at the "International Engine of the Year Awards": the 5-litre V10 high-revving power unit employed in the models BMW M5, BMW M5 Touring, BMW M6 Coupe and BMW M6 Convertible received first prize in 2005 and 2006. This year the 373 kW/507 bhp high-end power unit won the Above 4-litre category. The BMW M GmbH was successful in positioning a further winner: the 309 kW/420 bhp V8 engine boasted by the new BMW M3 won the category for engines in the 3 to 4 litre category. Furthermore, the 2-litre four-cylinder diesel with Variable Twin Turbo employed in the BMW 123d received the award for "Best New Engine" of the 2008. And the 1.6-litre four cylinder with Twin Scroll Turbocharger and direct petrol injection employed in the MINI Cooper S managed to repeat last year's win in the engine class 1.4 to 1.8 litres.
For the first time in the history of the competition, the title "Best New Engine of the Year" has been awarded to a diesel engine. The 150 kW/204 bhp four-cylinder diesel with Variable Twin Turbo has earned this award due to a unique relation between performance and efficiency. As the world's first full-aluminium diesel power unit it delivers a specific output of more than 100 bhp per litre of displacement. At the same time it facilitates in the BMW 123d an average fuel consumption of 5.2 litres per 100 km in an EU test cycle and a CO2 emission level of 138 grams per km. This renders it a fine example of the consistent realisation of the BMW EfficientDynamics development strategy.
With its current win of six trophies, the BMW Group continues to impressively dominate the engine competition which has been held now for ten years. The repeated success of the straight six engine with Twin Turbo is already the sixth overall victory for the company since the foundation of the "International Engine of the Year Awards" in 1999. The bandwidth of the BMW Group's currently successful engines is also remarkable. They range from the 128 kW/175 bhp four cylinder of the MINI Cooper S to the two high-revving power units produced by the BMW M GmbH.
The "International Engine of the Year Award" has been presented since 1999 by an international jury consisting of highly prominent car journalists. This year the team of experts comprises 65 top journalists from 32 nations which include the USA, Japan, China, Russia, India, Germany, France, New Zealand, Korea and South Africa and, this year, Romania and Poland. Prizes are awarded for eleven categories as well to the winner of the overall rating. The award ceremony will be held on 7th May during the "Engine Expo 2008" in Stuttgart.
