Minnesota Lane Filtering - Coming 7/1/2025!

"In revised 2022 guidelines, the California Highway Patrol updated speed limits again with a continued focus on prudent speed differentials versus surrounding traffic. The maximum speed threshold remains 50 mph for lane splitting. However, the differential dropped to 10 mph when traffic flows above 30 mph, and 5 mph when traffic is moving at 30 mph or less."

That's not the impression I got here from a few members. Anyone got more recent law changes on splitting in Ca.?
Getting sick of repeating myself...

CHP guidelines ARE NOT LAW. They are suggestions, and might be used by the individual officers to determine if a rider is behaving badly and should be cited for reckless, but they ARE NOT LAW, nor are they "law changes". The law is as linked above in previous posts regarding the California statues. That is the only law on the books regarding splitting. I.e., no - there haven't been any "recent law changes" in CA.

I suspect the real issue is the lack of knowledge and awareness of car and truck drivers in any state where lane splitting/filtering is being or has just been made legal. The California study - where it has been lawful and common for a few decades - showed that still more than 1/3 of surveyed drivers thought it was not legal. Motorcycle organizations and the State will do big favors if there is a good public awareness campaign. A brochure should be handed to every motorist renewing their driver's license in my opinion. And a question or two about it on the written test would be a good idea too.

One other note regarding the collection of data...

The data in the study specifically about lane splitting was in large part gathered from police reports... In my own incident, I know that the incident report was not correct.

I was next to the front wheel of the car that was involved in the incident with me, but the report stated that I impacted the rear of the vehicle. So like most things, the quality of the data may be off somewhat, and likely leans against the motorcyclists...

Visiting tourists can be maddening. Im trying to get to the front at a light and they block me out. They head my way, up here to wine country, from the SF and Oakland airports and will block you when you’re splitting on 101 or 580. It’s how mirrors get punched off of rental cars.

The law is if you have 5 vehicles behind you, you’re supposed to let people by in the turnouts. Tourists never do, so I wind up passing them over the double yellow somewhere safe. If you come rolling up on a local with +20mph, they’ll let you by.

Up on 1, they’re mortified and are going 20mph under the limit, but won’t yield. You’re not getting a trophy, visiting friend, so let me by. I don’t want to be here behind you and chances are, judging by your fear of transverse g loads, you’d rather I wasn’t here either.

California is not like where you live, dear tourist. We love when you visit. We love seeing you enjoying our beautiful state. But try to know the local traffic laws a little so you can be polite.

Last fall a friend was staying in Eureka, having breakfast at his hotel. At the next table some nice folks from MN are having a “howaboutthemroadsMartha” conversation and are commenting on all the cars tailgating them and how drivers here in California are aggressive.

My friend asks them if they’re letting people by when that happens. The Minnesotans are flummoxed, so he tells them about the law and turnouts. He said the nice visitors realized that the folks behind them weren’t the rude drivers - they were.

Same for lane splitting here. People don’t know and tourists are the worst. Just let us through.

Next up: “How to Spot a Rental Car in NorCal” and “Why is there a single line at In N Out when they have 4 Registers?”. :ha

Answer: nobody gets stuck in the “slow line”.

We don't have any of those problems here in the Texas Big Bend. Others yes! Those no! :)

I'm a little farther north now, so I have fewer tourists to contend with. If I'm out of the house by 8, the day trippers haven't made it up here yet and the roads are mostly mine. If I'm rolling backwoods roads like out by Cazadero, chances are good I won't have any tourists to deal with until I get to 1.

South Texas is the only other place I've ridden where folks will let you buy if you catch them.

Bolded:

That's a criminal act, and something you shouldn't be engaging in nor posting here. If one can't control their temper better than that, perhaps they shouldn't be on the road at all in or on any vehicle/.

It's a great way to get shot on the road.

Well, yeah. I also live in a state where you don't have to assume people will kill you over a mirror because hardly anyone is carrying.

But when you're sliding through traffic and someone deliberately attempts to squash you flat, you tell me who's initiating an assault on another person with a deadly weapon?

Ya, the state of Ca. being that bastion of liberalism has denied it's citizens access to their 2A rights. BUT, lets not forget ASSuming no one has a gun on them in Ca. could be a fatal mistake. Plenty of criminals in your state have all manner of firearms/weapons that could take a motor rider out who thinks they can get away with busting a mirror off some cage because there'll be no instant Karma based on the ASSumption, the cager can't possibly have a firearm on them and retaliate by shooting the motor rider.

It's not an assault, it's use of deadly force, to wit, a motor vehicle. Yet one still has to prove in a court of law there was "intent" to do grave bodily harm or death which will be very hard to prove. In California, intentionally damaging a vehicle is illegal and can be charged as malicious mischief to a vehicle under Vehicle Code 10853 or as vandalism under Penal Code 594. Depending on the amount of damage and intent, it can be a misdemeanor or a felony.

Ripping the mirror off a cage wasn't inadvertent while some cager nearly squashing you COULD very well be inadvertent or purposeful. The courts will have to decide the matter of "intent".

I'll make this as plain as I can for anyone reading this post. Rip a mirror off my cage for ANY reason whatsoever, they'll pay dearly instantly or later after I've run the plate and found out where you live. Then the party really gets started. My suggestion? ASSume people are carrying a firearm in CA. Between 1996 and 2021, more than 5.2 million handguns and almost 2.9 million long guns were legally purchased in California. Rip a mirror off a cager and it may just be the last illegal act you ever make. The risk is far too high for retaliation and when it's a cage vs motor, guess who's going to lose big time :sneaky:

OK, folks...please steer away from firearm discussions and the like. Not good for our conversations!!
Is it acceptable MOA member/s advocates vandalizing vehicles on a public way for any reason? I find that reprehensible and advancing an illegal act due to road rage. You meet the nicest people on a Honda may have actually been true after all

If you are referring to this-

I really can't picture a BMW rider punching off the mirror on a rental car. I would think it would be more likely that they copy down the registration number and turn it over to their lawyer.:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:
I'm not sure how this thread devolved into this. Traffic is traffic and for me, out of state plates going to Boston or Cape Cod get a pass as I figure that it could be the occupants of the car on a piece of road headed to a place they have never been. It usually happens that drivers a going slower as they don't know where they are going.
As for road rage in general- I have found that the driver that got pi$$$ed off and say flips another driver off is seen as an aggressive move by the pi$$$ed off driver as the other driver doesn't know they did something to aggravate the other driver.

And, this reminds me of a scene in the Steve Martin movie, L.A. Story :eek

Don’t look at me. I’m not endorsing damage, but have seen it when people in cars play deadly games with riders.

In the mod discussion around this thread, please remember I’m not slagging someone’s home state like this guy has, nor am I advocating using deadly force for a property crime.

Sheesh. I’m trying to be good.

TGIF. I’m going riding and I’m probably doing some lane splitting this morning through the east bay.

Thanks for clarifying your post 104, not you doing damage but you've seen others ripping mirrors of cages. There's a group of hooligan riders out here in the valley that take plates off to go play in the street and regularly post about some perceived injustice that fallen upon them on the road and that's their retaliation. That and old spark plugs they throw that busts glass quite handily.

Slagging your state? Hardly, it's an indisputable fact for the last 1/2 century [ since Reagan ]. The only state to hold that title by the way

Nor did I advocate using deadly force for a property crime. THIS is what I said "Rip a mirror off my cage for ANY reason whatsoever, they'll pay dearly instantly or later after I've run the plate and found out where you live." Lets all try better at not making false statements about another members post/s.

I've been a firm believer in the FAFO as long as I can remember
