Luftmeister /7 voltmeter/clock access

I can see a loose wire behind the voltmeter inside my Luftmeister fairing by looking through the turn signal port and can feel it by reaching in through the side opening, but I need need better access to reattach the wire. I read various threads about fixing and replacing voltmeters, but no one mentioned how to physically remove and install them. The headlight in the fairing is the adjustable style and it would seem like I need to remove the headlight and its mounting shell to get inside the fairing behind the clock and voltmeter. But it's not obvious to me how to do that. The shell is spring loaded and pivots up and down on bolts on each side of the shell where it attaches to the fairing. I might be able to remove the bolts, but am not sure I could put it back together with the spring tension, plus there is no room to use a wrench inside the fairing on the nuts. Is there some trick to removing the headlight shell to get into the fairing or is there some other way to access the back side of the voltmeter and clock wiring that I'm missing? Thanks for any help. Welcome!

Don't bother removing the headlight...there's a closed dish in the fairing behind the headlight so I don't think that helps with any access.

You have to work blindly. I've replaced the original voltmeters a while back on my Lufty /7 fairing. It's probably best to try and loosen the clamp that holds the meter in place. Then you can pull the meter out to figure out the wiring.

Can you reach in with a digital camera or cellphone to get a picture of what's going on? That might help. But there's a single threaded rod sticking out the back of the with a thin u-clamp that goes through that rod and the legs of the clamp press up against the inside of the fairing. See #7 on this diagram:

You may need to find the right open end wrench that fits the nut and reach in, fish around, and get the nut loosened. Then you can do the rest by hand. BTW...don't drop anything while doing this!!

Thanks so much for the info. I can't believe there is no way to access the inside of the fairing, but apparently that's the way it is and taking the headlight shell out would only make things worse. I have to wonder how it was put together in the first place? Thanks for the suggestions.

Been there, done that...

Make sure to mark and tape the wires as well; I can't remember if there were 2 or 3 wires (some guages run a third wire for the illumination bulb in the guage). Needle nose pliers or hemostadts work well with the wires. The job is not difficult, just tedious. Done once, it becomes a piece of cake.
Miss the VDO's on my 1100RT.

Best,

Will
