Low fuel light

Welcome here.
You are probably going to have to open up the tank to figure out what is wrong. Your bike has a fuel "guage" strip which is really a potentiometer. Attached to that is a wiper with a float arm on it. Chances are something is hanging it up or the fuel guage strip itself is contaminated with crud that builds up. This can be carefully removed using a Q Tip and isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol. The fuel pump, fuel filter, and fuel level float assembly is located onside the tank mounted on the fuel pump plate. It is the brass colored round plate mounted vertically on the underneath side of the fuel tank.

There are 6 or 8 capscrews holding it in place. It is sealed with a large O ring that will probably be all swelled up so it won't go back in until it dries back out after a few weeks - so get a new one.

There are two small diameter fuel hoses buried inside the tank that connect to this plate. And, threading the filter, pump, float etc out will seem like getting six inches of stuff through a four inch hole but it all works.
 
To make sure the issue is in the tank, first pull the main plug feeding the tank.
The light should remain out when the ignition on.
 
Pulled relay center back in box #61 35 2306 365 , light went out. Not sure if that is the right one or what it means.

If you look up that part # on max fiche you would see that it is the relay in question.

So it is either the relay or the wiring downstream.

Follow the wiring diagram


If you determine it is in fact the relay, PM me, I have one.

Ah, a Skeeter, see what happens when you modernize? Welcome to the forum. How is that GS doing of you otherwise?
 
The airheads seem to give me less problems, even with the high miles. GS has another issue with ABS so now I have to pick up a GS911 to sort that out. At least I'll have all winter to get things back in shape.
 
Low fuel light r1100r

FYI, I just learned that my bike will do another 27 miles after the light comes on. Much of that was on the highway at 70 tof 75.
 
So I've been riding my '94 RS for at least 10 years w/ a constant low fuel light. Not a big deal, just fill up every 120 miles or so. Every tech I've talked to has told me it's the sensor inside the tank and that always sounded like a job to do later rather than now. I finally decided to fix it this week and it seems my procrastination has finally paid off: I found this thread when looking for instructions on changing out and or repairing the sensor, and 10 minutes later I confirmed my relay was bad.


Thanks GSAddict! You saved me several hours, probably some money and I don't have to put up with hands that smell like gasoline for a week. The next job I've been saving for "later" is the hall effect sensor, probably will do that over the Thanksgiving or Christmas holidays. Pls PM me if you're still rewiring those things.

I sure hope you don't get caught in a pouring rainstorm between now and Thanksgiving.
 
My low fuel light comes on around 200 miles after fill up usually takes 4+- gallons of gas have 6.1 gallon tank, light is supposed to come on 100 miles from empty. Calculate your mpg for several tanks of gas or every tank than keep track of miles ridden and you know what gas level is. Remember there is a reason they call indicator lights "idiot lights" . My bike 1994 R1100RS usually get about 45mpg average.

I know, it should have failed by now but I ride in the rain all of the time with no symptoms. This bike has never stranded me in 24 yrs so I'm hoping the streak continues.

As I remember, I think it used to come on around 160~170 miles for me, but I spend most of my time in 3rd gear so that might have something to do with it. I know I'm sandbagging by filling up at 120 but it only takes a minute to fill up vs a lot longer to push it home. Regardless, my relay has shipped and should be to me by Saturday or Monday and I'm looking forward to that light going out.
