Kbike Leaking Oil

KBIKE

New member
I have a 96 K1100LT with about 35k on it, did the spring oil change on it and finally went over to Synthetic Motor Oil. Also changed out the Transmission and rear differential oil along with the antifreeze and some over items.

Took it out today and looked it over when I returned and found what seems to be a leak above the center stand. I do not think it was there before unless I just did not notice it till now. The peephole at the bottom of the transmission is dry so far as I can tell. I have read before if the rear seal starts to leak you can find oil at the peephole

It looks like it is leaking the oil (what kind??) around the clutch boot cover above the center stand. At this point I can not tell what is leaking and exactly where it is coming from.

I am holding off driving it for now until I can get to a dealer to have a look at it. Hoping someone here might have some thoughts on what might leaking from this location.

I am beginning to think it is Harley-Davidson bike instead of BMW the way this Bike likes to leak vital fluids.

Thanks
Rich G.

Any machine that holds oil will leak, eventaully. Clean the wound with brake cleaner or Gum-out and run it again. When you get back home, you should be able to see fresh leakage.

The clutch boots eventually wear out. That boot is acting as an oil seal of sorts. Replace the boot and you will no longer have transmission oil staining your garage floor. At the least, check to see if the clip holding the boot on is still tight.

Thanks for the reply, I did not know that there would be oil behind this cup. I thought it would be a dry area of the bike.

I looked at this again after a quick ride and there is oil dripping down on the pipe and because of the heat coming from the pipes it turns to sludge. It looks like I have to take off the exhaust system to get to the boot and replace it

Thanks
Rich G.
