K100 output shaft HELP!

I need to remove my output shaft on 1985 K100rs. Already have the whole back of the bike removed. I was doing the clutch, but now find I have a problem with the output shaft. I is not engaged at all. I can turn the clutch housing freely both ways without turning the engine.

My question is... What else has to come off to get to the output shaft? Rear bell housing, alternator, oil pan.....what about the oil and water pump? will it drop down with the oil pan??:dunno

Thanks in advance!! Michael B. Athens, GA

It sounds like we are kind of at the same spot on our bikes. So you are saying when you rotate the clutch assembly, the output shaft doesn't turn? I think you would be able to see what was going on with that at the clutch splines. If they are in contact with the output shaft, it's going to turn.

If I understand you correctly - the output shaft turns freely? That can only be the rivets that hold the gear on the shaft have broken. It happened on the early K's once in a while. Fix is a later model shaft (has 12 rivets instead of 6)..

Yes - about all of that has to come off AFAIK.. but I don't think the oil pump has to be removed.

Do you have a manual?

Just went and looked at the parts list in REALOEM.COM - it appears a lot of the original parts - like the output shaft aren't available, and replacing the shaft with the newer replacement requires replacing quite a few other parts.

A suggestion - a used engine will likely be less expensive in the long run, so unless you're unusually attached to your engine, that's what I'd suggest. Any K100 engine up to the 4-valve versions should fit as a bolt in. Since the engines rarely break - they are usually quite inexpensive used ($300 range.)

Unless you're a glutton for punishment, a few calls to some wrecking yards should get you on the road fairly quickly.

Yep....I got the bottom of the oil pan dropped and found the offending broken rivets, and some mystery chunks of metal! So I think the engine swap is the answer!:drink

Anyone got suggestions on where to find one. I'm not really interested in a 4 valve. 2 is enough 4 me!! I just missed a nice 36k motor at beemerboneyard for $400. I'm in GA and would like to pick it up myself if possible.

Thanks!!!

Oh yeah.....it had 162k on it, so not too bad for a "6 rivet motor!" ;)

I had this problem with my 85 K100RS at 110K miles. I had my local dealer rebuild it and was still running at 230k miles before I sold it.

Output shaft failure

Are there signs of impending failure of the output shaft or does it just happen without warning?

Besides the knocking (which also can be the anti-backlash gear - designed to stop noise, it makes noise..) finding rivet parts in your drained oil is a BIG hint.

I have an ÔÇÖ85 k100 that makes noise at start when it is cold. I attributed it to the engine running rough at start up, but it may be the output shaft. Is there a way the check the shaft without disassembling the engine?

Thanks
