Installing headers on a R69S ?

MUSICMAN

Almost have my R69S back together since my grandfather owned it....

I put the headers on as far as I could get them to go in, put the crossover
pipe on and hand tightened the finned nuts. I worked both sides of the header
in by alternating each side with a slight twisting back and forth and light
blow with a rubber mallet. My kick stand still hits the crossover when it
retracts, not by much, but it seems to me it should clear it.

(both washers are in finned nuts and I've used never seize)

Will I gain the space when I get the proper wrench to tighten up the finned
nuts?

Do I need to take the header pipe hangers, crossover pipe off and start again?

Then what?

Thanks for your help!

69S exhaust

This site has a general discussion on vintage exhaust.

http://w6rec.com/duane/bmw/exhaust/index.htm

The site also provides some discussion on replacement mufflers if you require such.

My 69S has the original header configuration, and with this setup, the pipe ends are free to move into the heads. This allows the crossover to be positioned so as to provide slight clearance for the stand.
Many of these bikes have mix and match exhaust components, some original, some after market, or a combination of both. 35-40 years provides plenty of opportunities for the bike to diverge from its original factory configuration. Because of this fact, it is difficult to state just exactly what is causing your problem. A clue may be --- does the pipe show signs that the stand was hitting before your tear down?

brand new

Hey Motard thanks for the reply. This bike is a build from a box, so all new exhaust system. My buddy reccomended that I may have the pipes jammed into the crossover pipe too much and to twist them out to see if that gains clearance for the side stand. He also gave me his brown side stand.

Saturday I hopefully get the air head running!
