How Do I Replace a Lost K1200LT Key?

Stranded in Daytona Beach or How Stupid Am I?

Howdy, folks.

Call me, Stoopid. (I deserve it.)

I am in what was to be my last day in Daytona Beach, FL and I discovered last night that my only (STUPID) key has managed to disappear. Fortunately, the bike is locked down at the hotel, but retracing steps--asking half the population--and other steps have not led to the missing key.

There is a Daytona BMW dealer near me, but they don't open until tomorrow.

I am HOPING that they will be able to create a new key, but I wanted to call on the wizend elders here to get a few questions answered:

1) Do all dealerships have the ability to create new keys?

2) What information do they need from me? I don't have another key to get a code for them.

3) I do have the VIN, obviously, and the bike is still in BMW ownership, because they provided financing.

4) The original dealership I bought it from, used, is closed until Tuesday, but they probably don't have the details anyway. I would hope that BMW Financing would have all the details on the bike, with it still in their ownership.

5) Does the fact that this is a 2000 model complicate the dealer's ability to provide this service?

6) Lastly, how much does such a service cost?

Any input, as always, is appreciated. Thank you for listening and sorry for gripeing.

Thanks.

Sorry I'm not able to provide much help, as my bike is in a garage across town, or I'd look at mine (2000 K1200LTC), in particular the documentation. If I get a chance later this evening, I'll go over there and see what I can dig up.

This is what I think I know, in answer to your points; and by the way I've been to the Daytona dealer numerous times, and they are (or were) quite good:

1) Yes, or at least supposed to; 99.999% sure Daytona does.

2) If you cannot get into the trunk for documentation (locked), the VIN should do it. I keep thinking that I've seen a key code information sheet in the documentation - could be wrong though.

4) Don't worry about the original dealership. I doubt that the financing company has any useful information regarding this problem.

5) No

6) Don't worry - it's reasonable.

Don't worry about the griping. These things happen.

However, I must ask - you DO back up the hard drive on your computer, right? :whistle

Without a key to copy from, I think they'll need to order a new key from BMW. Probably take a few days.
If say you BROKE the key, they probably have a new blank and could cut a key. But without something to cut a key from they'll need to order one.
Is there a key at your home someone could overnight to you? Would be faster.

I know this doesn't help

But it might help someone down the line. Whatever bike I am riding away from home, I carry a spare key around my neck on a small chain. I bought a second, "real" key from BMW for my Beemer. I got that idea from the Forum on the Iron Butt Site. Never needed it, but I believe it is because I always have it!
