Helmets DOT or ECE 22-05 Standards In The U.S.?

I have a question for the folks in the U.S.

I understand that DOT is the accepted standard of motorcycle helmets in the U.S.

Does anyone know if this is an exclusive requirement, of if the ECE 22-05 Standard is also acceptable?

DOT certification is required of any helmet sold in the USA. Anything else is optional - Snell, EC, etc..

thanks, this leaves me wondering where I would stand if I were to by one and visit the U.S. on the bike.

I understand that the ECE 22-05 is accepted in Ont. and they are sold here.

I am looking at a purchase for next season, maybe it is easier to buy the Shuberth C3, which is sold here with a DOT cert.

I wouldn't worry about it at all. As a visitor to the US, you can legally bring in (temporarily, as for a vacation) and ride a bike (or drive a car) that doesn't conform to the US DOT safety requirements or to the US EPA's emissions standards. The same would be true for your helmet...and beyond the occasional cop hassling a chopper rider for his obviously non-compliant "beanie" "helmet," I've never seen any attention paid to a helmet that looked like a helmet.

Buy what you want, and enjoy the trip!

No worries. I have several friends from England who have come the the U.S. multiple times, bringing their own helmets and gear (and sometimes motorcycles) each time. Never had a problem, even if they happened to get pulled over by police who were wondering what that funny looking number plate (license tag) was....
