Headlight issues on R1200RT

3 times in last year lowbeam has gone out. Struggling to change it as I dupuytrens in both hands. The current bulb is lodged in the holder and tried everything but can't grab it. Is there anything else to access the bulb say remove the windshield or fairing? Thanks

The low-beam on my 2018 R1200RTw failed the morning that I was returning home from a trip. Fortunately I'd added some Clearwater LED aux lights so I could make it home safely. And I'd already purchased the LED Hi/Lo beam replacement bulbs from Cyclops. Installation of the LED bulb is a bit different from the incandescent bulb that failed. The LED bulb is placed in a collar with about a 1/8 turn. The collar is held in place by the wire clips that normally secure the incandescent bulb.

If one had a well-trained monkey (or very young child) with very small hands it might be possible to remove the failed bulb and install the collar then LED bulb without taking a lot of stuff apart. I was not able to do this and did not have the small, well-trained hands available. I also dropped the collar inside the housing when I thought I could this without taking things apart (using a fibre optic camera output to my phone).

Thus it became necessary for me to remove the windscreen and a lot of bits and pieces to access the housing for the Hi / Lo beam bulbs. I retrieved the collar from the housing, cleaned everything (which was actually a good thing as there was a lot of dirt in otherwise hard-to-access places.) I ordered extra stainless steel fasteners, plastic expandable fasteners and rubber "donuts" (although I was able to re-use some of these, but better safe than sorry). I took my time and by the third attempt all of the pieces fit together very nicely.

I found it quite useful to print the various exploded parts diagrams of the windscreen and associated body parts. Max BMW fiche is a very good resource -

I hope these LED bulbs from Cyclops last a very long time!

Maybe this will help some. Difficult to figure out what you're working with if you can't see it. I stripped off my Tuperware when I replaced/converted the headlamps on my 2018 RT.

One of the pictures includes a shot of the rear of the headlamp assembly, the three lights, and how they clips operate. Hopefully, you can zoom in to see what you're trying to work on. Once those clips or the bulb fall into the globe, you're gonna be tear it down like I did, to retrieve it. I took a shot at going through the rears speakers, which are like a siren calling sailing fools, making it look possible to access the bulbs via that route. If you have hands larger than an eight your olds, it'll probably be difficult. (The yellow highlights illustrate the vertical and horizontal adjusting knobs, as well as that lever down at the bottom that I can't quite recall the purpose for.. 🙄😖).

I had good luck in the past removing the right speaker cover. That allowed me to see the spring clip and make changing the bulb a bit easier. Still a bit tricky to get but easier than trying to do it without removing anything and faster than removing everything.

Forceps are your friend. (Available from Amazon and other suppliers.) They go where fat fingers refuse to go. FYI
