Good monoshock w/o breaking bank?

I have been very happy with my works shock and have seen them on fleabay for $200 used. Used stock ones going cheap also. At the time I bought mine they used to advertise that they were rebuildable for a price of around 60 bucks. To me that was a selling point too. I have gotten the nitorgen recharged only because of preventative stuff when I was rebuilding other things. I hope they still offer this service, because next winter I might send it down for a rebuild, just for preventative. Mine is about 5 years old and about 45k on it now

just checked and there is a used one on fleabay for a early k bike, dont know if it would fit. says needs to be rebuilt. currently at 100.
if it fits, you can buy it, send it to works to get rebuilt and be into a rebuilt one for under 250

at 45K and 5 years, your shock rebuild is no longer preventative of anything. it is due. most likely past due.

I can't really speak for Airheads, because by now the age now if it is original, it will need to be replaced. My oilhead, after 20K the stock one's were toast.

Works, Wilbur, Ohlins, are all excellent replacements. All rebuildable, which they recommend every 20K or every 2 to 3 years... I have a works on my 80RS and a Wilbur on the R100R.... in cost they are Works, wilbur and then ohlins...

ooops
did not kow they had shuch a short life, could not tell by the ride
I also was not aware they were made in china with only a 2 year life, :whistle
guess it comes off this weekend

shock performance degradation is progressive, incremantal and slow. so many riders think that their shocks are "fine"- cuz they compare today's performance to yesterday's performance, rather than to new equipment.

I had a Works shock rebuilt for my K100 because I won a $100 gift certificate (thank you MOA Rally) for a door prize. I did not expect to feel a difference but it was night and day.

I thought all K bikes bottomed out on rough roads ... now I know better.

The R100R I recently picked up has a Hagon shock. It works fine for my riding. From what I've read, if you aren't a track rider, its a good shock for the money. I think the one I have would be around $5-600. YMMV

so here is the official answer from works and longevity and cost to rebuild for a monoshock R80RT
youll see by the longevity, 40k is pushing it, and rebuilding is only gonna cost $78 plus shipping. Ill be yanking it off and sending it to them next week

Re: BMW R80RT

In regard to longevity, age doesn't have much to do with it. Road conditions and vehicle loaded weight do. The shock for the R80ST is a "small body" type. That is, in comparison to a modern sport bike, the shock is much smaller and therefore has a smaller oil capacity. While we incorporate a reservoir to add oil capacity and cool the oil to increase the oil's service life, the shocks service interval will typically be less than that of a similar weight bike with a bigger shock and more oil capacity.
Swingarm leverage ratio is also a factor. Higher leverage ratios degrade the shock oil quicker than bikes with low leverage on the shock(s). We have seen modern bikes with high leverage that causes oil degradation and shock failure in as little as 6000 miles. As oil is forced through the piston valving passages in a shock, the structure of the oil chain is degraded over time, eventually reducing the oil to a carbon goo without the ability to perform the damping function, much like the engine oil which degrades fairly rapidly, requiring the oil to be changed at appropriate intervals to effectively protect the engines moving components. Although our piston valving design is less harsh on oil than other designs, there is a physical limit to oil life which has little to do with brand of product and more to do with the design of the motorcycle's shock and swingarm geometry in relation to the loaded weight of the vehicle.

Regardless of brand of shock, the physical and geometric parameters remain the same and no shock on the market can be expected to have a service life in excess of that which we provide. We believe that we offer the best product available for this application.

You could typically expect between 20 and 40 thousand miles of service on the shock. If you ride relatively smooth roads with lighter loads, you would approach the upper end of serviceability and , conversely, reduced mileage under more severe conditions and with heavier loads.

We do provide a 3 month ride quality warranty and a 12 month parts and workmanship warranty. Other brands typically offer no such warranties.

The shock for your bike is a Steel Tracker Series with dual rate (black) springs , threaded preload, remote reservoir and the ARS System @ $509.
a replacement preload wrench is $13.50.

Service of your Works shock is $50 for Gas and oil Service and $18 for seals. Providing all other components are in good condition, that's it.

Unlike generic, off the shelf shocks offered by other shock companies, Works shocks are custom built for rider weight, riding style and skill level and come with a performance guarantee ( 30 days), parts and workmanship warranty ( 12 months on street bikes, 90 days on race and off road vehicles) and are fully rebuildable.
