Getting rid of the stock sidestand...

HERRBAYEMVAY

Lovin' my CLC!
Since my stock sidestand on my '84 R65 has become bent and has developed two major cracks, I'm gonna have to replace it, and I think it will be with a Brown sidestand (seems like I've heard mostly positive comments on it). Now, will I need one of those weird "flange" tools in order to remove the pipe on the side with the stand in order to make this switch? Is there anything else I should be prepared for in making the swap? Although I've never done this before, it doesn't "seem" like it would be all that difficult to do (or am I being naive?). If anyone out there has done this, I'd appreciate any comments or tips to make the swap easier. Danke Sehr!

I don't think so. The Brown stand mounts to a steel block which has holes in it for the rear motor mount and IIRC the left-side exhaust pipe clamp (the header/muffler connection) behind the motor mount. You don't have to take the header off, and therefore don't need the exhaust nut wrench. Just leave the stock sidestand in place if you want; it's out of the way when retracted anyway.

The Surefoot is way better than the Brown.

The Surefoot would be easier to mount, I agree, but only has one support. The Brown has two. Is one better? Is there something else?

The Brown doesn't really have two supports. The front one is really just someplace to hang the exhaust from. No, supporting the bike via the exhaust system is not a good idea.

OTOH, the Surefoot has a half loop that contacts the frame, providing, indeed, two support points.

The Brown Sidestand I had on my R80G/S mounted to the rear motor mount and the footpeg pivot bolt. It was most DEFINITELY a STURDY two-point mounting system.

But I dunno if the R65 has the same set-up or not.

Please address the thread. I too would like to know how to REMOVE the ORIGINAL sidestand on my R90/6, so that I could put either a BROWN or SUREFOOT kickstand on. Can anyone explain how to remove the sidestand?:wave

Not sure about the "Surefoot", but

I just left my stock stand alone when I put the Brown on my RS. It doesn't really get in the way or anything. Just a thought.

I have the brown stand on my R65 since 1985, I left the side stand on. I also have the brown stands on my R90 and my other R65.

I pulled a Brown sidestand off and put the stocker back on. It was a bit of a pain, but I didn't have to remove the pipe. (If you must know, I've had one bad experience with leaving a sidestand down and riding off.)

moto bin looks nice and one advantage over the brown is that it has a big foot

too bad that we can not get the early versions here in the US as it lists anything before 79 as being a uk item only

I realize this is a very old thread, but I am trying to figure out how to get rid of my side stand, which is not the original, but is the same and same mounting. I just installed a Farley and the side stand does interfere with it, and need to get rid of the other one. Only way I can see is either a hacksaw to saw most of it off, or a hammer and chisel to take at the attachment point. BTW, from what I can see, the Farley is going to be great.
Thanks to anyone who is still around with this issue.

What is the bike model and year?

Found this one thread using the Tag Cloud.

Mine is a 1972 R 75/5. I looked at that thread, but don't quite know it it is applicable to mine, I don't see a "top plate", but will look closer tomorrow as my light died as well so didn't get a real good look. If all else fails I will hacksaw the stand off as high as I can so that it isn't interfering with anything, then try and get the rest later. I know the guy I bought the bike from said it was an "after market" stand so maybe he can tell me. I think he is on a "cross Canada" ride right now with my old 1200 RT (part of a deal that we worked out to exchange bikes).
Thanks for the input.

A picture of the setup would probably help.

That isn't quite the setup mine is as it is an aftermarket stand that is a copy of the original. It looks like it was put in place and a pin driven into the hole and it has a spot weld on top of the pin, so no chance to drive it back out. I cut about 2/3rds of the stand off with a hacksaw and 3-4 inches left just curls up against the motor, held in place with the spring. It is barely visible as it is partially behind the exhaust pipe...just looks like another piece of chrome on the bike, so going to leave it as is. I have some pictures that I will try and post later.

Hmmm...hadn't heard of an aftermarket stand that attached nearly the same way as stock. The usual aftermarkets are the Brown or Farley...

I am just going by what the original owner told me as he said it was an aftermarket stand. It is fully stainless and pictures of ones I see on ebay and other sites don't look stainless to me as they are dull, rougher texture, etc., but that could just because they are used and are showing signs of age and use. The one on my bike was very shiny and fairly new. It is possible that it was an original that hadn't been used much prior to be putting on this bike. Whatever it was it was, it is no longer in my way. I am trying to figure out how to get pictures loaded here so I can post some.
