Gas cap won't close

Press fuel filler cap of fuel tank
down firmly.
Fuel filler cap audibly engages.
Fuel filler cap automatically
locks after run-on time expires.
The engaged fuel filler cap
locks immediately when the
steering lock is locked or during
starting.

Yep, doesn't say anything about lifting the lug - but it's hard to close if you don't.

gas cap

2015 R1200GS had same problem, tech at BMW showed me, he pulled latching tongue out with his fingernail then cap closed, but hard. He said to lift latch then close don't hit cap with hand. Went home put some dielectric grease on latching lock and presto cap closes easily as I hit it with my hand. So I lube as latch gets harder to close. small maintance issue.

Had this issue coming home from the SLC Rally over the weekend. After monkeying around a bit, I figured it out. You basically need to slide the latching mechanism that is at the top of the opening (closest to the handlebars) back towards the seat until a little pin pops up. Once the pin is up, you can easily close the gas cap.

I had the same problem on my fill up before the rally... its possible to knock into that latching mechanism with the gas pump and move it forward. All you need to do is slide it back and it will work fine.
