Garmin 2730/2720/2610 Question

Nothing really to add but wanted to get this thread up to 100 posts.:wave

Is the 2610 the same model as the BMW Motorrad Navigator II? What's the Garmin branded equivalent of the BMW Motorrad Navigator III?

I have the BMW Nav II--it's uses compact flash card and the buttons on the right have dual functions (press and hold for second function).

It looks to me like the newer versions (27xx, 28xx) have done away with these dual function keys.

Reason I'm asking is that I've had a lot of trouble with those buttons, and now the touch screen, on my BMW Nav II. I did get a 3 year warranty buying the BMW unit (versus a Garmin standard 1 year), and am getting ready to send it back again. 3 week turnaround first time I took it back (they send it to Garmin for servicing). Hopefully mine's just a lemon, and I'm asking them to replace it this time. I may just buy one of these refurbs too, as it should just pop into my current mount.

Greetings,

If you purchase a refurb it will fit in the mount but the buttons will not work.

I believe the III is the 2720. It has traffic but not XM.

If you bought the Navigator from your dealer see if he will swap it for a III. It is a better unit.

Thanks, Robnye.

I'm taking it in tomorrow. BMW will just send it to Garmin, so I've made a letter asking for a replacement unit (III if possible), along with a video showing the problem. If I can just get any model that works, I'll be happy. It's really frustrating to be traveling and have it quit working.

Those of you thinking of getting a refurbished Garmin 2610 from Edge gps, don't plan on getting any free upgrade to get that 2007 data base upgraded to 2008. I hit a stone wall with Garmin's tech support system for my just-purchased unit, including arguing with a supervisor.

I am now very disappointed with Garmin. I had thought they were the top of the gps heap. Maybe Magellan or TomTom next time?:mad

Call again and hope to get someone else. I had no problem getting the upgrade City Navigator North America 2008. I believe that others on this thread also got the 2008 upgrade.

I went through the motions on-line and had NO problem. I even got an e-mail acknowledgement stating that I would see the disc in 5 to 10 business days.
Sure, I have yet to receive it but I have no doubts it will get to me.

How about some details of your difficulties.............:ear

I had registered my product, which was purchased Feb 20th, a few days ago. No free current upgrade was offered in the registration procedure, so I e-mailed Edge asking what to do next. They replied a few hours later -

"Yes, you actually need to just call Garmin and they will send you a FREE update. There number is 800-800-1020. If they give you a hard time just ask for a supervisor".

I called Garmin Tech support at that number (was that my mistake?) & the first live person said no for any refurbished units. I questioned this & he went offline to speak to his supervisor, came back on line & repeated the no. I then asked to speak to the supervisor myself, & encountered the same stonewall. I said that others on a popular M/C forum had gotten the upgrade, they said that this was out of their control but that Garmin policy would not provide a current upgrade to any refurbished units.

In all fairness, I was impressed that their tech support was easy to get to & was obviously US based.

(I may have to be back to them as there was some sort of problem downloading the 2007 data to the CF card.)

You might try getfeetwet.com. I have had great experience with them. When I bought my 2610, they provided a free warranty extension and replaced the unit after the factory warranty was long over. I believe they are currently selling refurbished 2610s for a little over $200 with an extended warranty.

Check post #85 in this thread provided by railbender.
I followed those instructions and had no problems.........(so far)

With my 2610 last month, it was actually the same as four years ago when I purchased my Street Pilot III, refurbished, I called Garmin and asked for the updated disk and how to unlock it. The fee was the same each time; free. Actually, this time, the unit had a defective USB cord. I asked for a replacement at the same time as the 2008 DVD; both arrived at no charge. Please try again and let us know how you fared.

I ordered mine about a month ago and was able to go through the motions online and got both the upgraded 2008 Navigator DVD shipped out no problem. Then I went back online and got the updated maps without a problem either.

I wonder if it's was a time-based offer of some sort?

Garmin free updates

I purchased a 2610 about two weeks ago & Garmin found that I qualified for the latest update for no charge. There are apparently some technicalities so as to qualify for this and I wonder that nrpetersen's circumstances ran afoul of some of these. My request was completed without any drama at all.

It never hurts to ask, the worst that can happen is that they will say no.

We are currently on a trip, my wife has her nuvi 350 installed in the car as well as I have the as yet un-updated 2610. The units have had a few routing disagreements so far. I will be interested in their agreement/disagreements after the update.

Good News - By following the procedure in Railbenders message above (post number 85) I apparently do qualify afterall for the 2008 update.

A key element through this maze is that the "Master Coupon Code" referred to in their web site, is the same as the "Customer Code" referred to elsewhere in their site. When all was entered, it directed me to shipping info without asking for a credit card. :p

RocRoc -

I tried to get back to the same spot in the Garmin website, but was unable for whatever reason but probably because I had ordered my free update.

I had registered my 2610 a few days earlier. Poking around "My Garmin", I found the registration code on my yellow keysheet referenced as the last few characters in the URL I was at. They were then requesting about Customer Code input, so I assumed them to be the same and voila - got thru to the update info and update ordering.

Now looking thru the My Garmin site, they referred to it simply as "Code". there never was a Master Coupon Code.

Bad software planning. Lack of consistency bugs me.

Just remember: Customer code=Registration Code=Code, to software engineers.:german
