Fuel gauge problem on R1200 GS ADV

tuckerdt

Tuckerdt
After filling the gas tank, I ride 130 miles and my fuel gauge goes down to one button above the reserve indicator. I can put another 130 miles on the tank without the gauge moving any farther. The local BMW folks say this is not an error.

I just can not believe the BMW engineers designed the gauge and sensor this way.

Anyone have a similar experience? If so, were you able to get it corrected?

Thanks.

Tucker Thomson

I had my fuel sensor strip replaced under warranty last week at BMW of Santa Cruz. It seems to be working a lot better now.

That's how mine works. At ~150 miles I get down to two bars. I stay there for another ~120 miles and then get down to one bar. After another ~30 miles I go into flashing mode. I ran in flashing mode (count down) for another 25 miles and put in 8.25 gallons.

This wouldn't be so big of an issue for me if the trip gauge was accessible while riding. It would have been nice if the trip computer would cycle through the trip gauges so we could easily check the fuel status.

Same deal. I also found that I have to ride a bit after a fill up before the low fuel warning quits.
My dealer has been waiting for BMW to issue a recall as quite a few of the R100 GSA's they've sold are behaveing similarly.
I like the idea of the sensor strip being replaced, though. I'll mention that to them next service.
Right now, I just watch my trip odometer and running around town, I'm getting 37 mpg. On the open though it's more like 47 mpg.:D

Best of luck.
Dave

+1!

I'm glad to hear some of the dealers have identified this as an issue. Some other posts on the AdvRider forum indicate it took persistance on the part of the owner to get the dealer to fix it. It will be interesting to see if (or how many?) BMW dealers claim "that's the way they are suppose to work", or "they all do that", or, or, or.

My fuel guage is performing exactly how tuckerdt described it. My 6K service is coming up and I plan to address it then.

Just noticed today with my NEW sensor. After 130 miles the bars drop drastically. My range drops to 38 miles! I know I have at least 2 gallons of gas left which is about 80 miles. I really think this range is counting down to the reserve tank with 1 gallon left.
I just called BMW of SC and the service guy is going to talk to his BMW rep and explain the problem. I mentioned that there were threads on MOA and ADVrider forums complaining about the R12GS FOOL gauge.

At one time BMW did install fuel gauges that worked and were accurate. They also installed horns that were loud.

My 91 K100RS has both. My 04 BMW does not.
