Dragon Alternatives?

How about nominating your favourite road. It is likely as exciting as the Dragon and a lot less crowded. Or is that like telling where your best fishing spot is?
My favoutite is far enough from home that I only get there about once a decade. It is US250 east of Moundsville WV. The about 30 miles to Hundred WV has lots a curves and hills. I was too busy riding to count them. The speed limit is 50 mph, and there was no danger of my exceeding that in most places.

US 12 from Lolo, MT to Clarkston, WA
UT 12 from US 189 to Torrey, UT
Talimina Skyline Drive from Talihina, OK to Mena, AR
MO 125 from the Peel-Protem Ferry on Bull Shoals Lake to Ozark, MO
NM 4 from White Rock, NM to Jemez Springs, NM
Mirror Lake Loop from Kamas, UT to Evanston, WY
Cherohala Skyway from Tellico Plains, TN to Robbinsville, NC
US191 from Clifton, AZ to Alpine, AZ

I live in the western end of Virginia and in addition to the wonderful crooked mountain roads where I live, I'm within an hour of equally good roads in Western North Carolina, Eastern Tennessee and Southern West Virginia. I have better roads than the Dragon any way I turn and I don't have to police and other bikes to worry about.

In Arkansas try this- Ar. Highway123 from I-40 near Clarksville off I-40 to Western Grove, atUS Highway 65. Or try this take Highway 16 from Clinton to Fayettville. Last , try this one, it's a combo. From Mt.View take Highways 9, 14, 341(Push Mt.) to Salesville. Backtrack to Mt.View on Highway 5, at Allison/Sylamore take Highway 9 to Melbourne. If your liking these, get a hold of me and I'll give U several more as good. :heart :clap

There is nothing good to ride here. Nothing that would even come close to putting the Dragon to shame. No Sir. Not even worth the visit. Just wide boring roads.:stick

Just ask KBasa.

It's in Colorado and I ain't sayin' anything more about it. :laugh

follow the squiggly line

Try Ohio Route 800 from the Ohio River to just south of Canton, Home of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, you would pick up Rt 800 off of Rt 7 the Ohio River road.

Rt 7 follows the Ohio River and Rt 800 can be found about 30 miles northeast of Marrietta Ohio.

Rt 800 is no Dragon but sure is an entertaining way to spend an afternoon, just be careful of the gravel in the turns!

Lolo Pass for sure !!!!
In that same area- Enterprise, OR Route 3 to Clarkston, OR

Hwy 95 from Blanding, UT to Hanksville, UT -Very Spiritual

Hwy 550 from Durango to Ridgeway, CO A classic favorite

Route 89 through Lassen Volcanic National Park which is about 40 miles east of Reading, CA You can ride this one slow and still be blown away by the scenery.

Glacier National Park - Going to the Sun road. Everyone should go here no less than once in their lifetime.

Independence Pass to Aspen - Not to mention many of the other passes in Colorado

One favorite down here in Texas: Hwy 337 from Medina to Camp Wood - YEEE HA

BC's highway #6 from Nakusp to Vernon over the Monoshees :thumb Very limited traffic (at least in the best parts) some good scenery, and often some wildlife. There's also a free ferry ride.

If you come to the Hudson Valley I'd be more than happy to show you around

CA-1 from Westport, CA to Leggett, CA. 25 miles of heaven that will blow away the Dragon, and has a lot less traffic on it, too.

Or, try CA-36, 135 miles from Red Bluff to Hydesville. Not all of it is that twisty--but a lot more than the 15 miles of the Dragon--and it also includes whoop-de-doos and great scenery as you go over three passes in the Siskiyous. Oh, and there's almost no traffic.

Both of these roads are far enough away from civilization that they don't get too many squids, and yet they are close enough to make a weekend destination from San Francisco.

Wisconsin's Own 'Dragon' For The BMW Rally!

Having ridden the 'Tail of The Dragon' this past October, and returning there again in May, '07, I appreciate the allure and challenge this road provides.

However, for those making the pilgrimage to Wisconsin for the '07 Rally in July, we have our own little warm-up stretch for sport-touring enthusiasts. It is State HWY 33, from the Wisconsin Dells area all the way west to LaCrosse, WI.

Wisconsin Dells is something of a playground destination in itself, and though I don't wish to lure anyone away from the festivities planned for the Rally, perhaps afterwards, you might consider this a tempting diversion. Ride HWY 33 from east to west, disecting Wildcat Mountain State Park along the way, and be ready for twists and turns that, though they don't rival North Carolina, would certainly warm you up for that style of riding.

Ultimately, you wind up in LaCrosse, WI, on the Mississippi River for lunch - not a bad destination either.

Welcome to WI, and as my fellow MSF RiderCoaches would say, "Enjoy the ride!":german

Nice try at directing everyone away from the nicer roads in that part of the state by posting these yawners. You're a clever one. :laugh

The ACTUAL good roads in this part of the state should read: Cal128, Lost Coast Highway, Cal 3, and Cal 96 thru Happy Camp.

My votes go to: (not necessarily in order of preference)

1. Cherohala Skyway and Blue Ridge Parkway
2. 276 from Greenville, SC to Brevard, NC
3. the Holy Trinity: 335, 336, 337 in the Texas Hill Country near Leaky/Camp Wood, Rocksprings
4. Tx 16 from Medina to Kerrville
5. Forgot the number, but it goes from Lajitas to Presidio, along the Rio Grande in Big Bend State Park (not the National Park)
6. Any road in the Black Hills near Sturgis/Mount Rushmore

Enjoy!

Well, it's true that everyone knows about these roads, so I'm not giving anything away. But I don't think the hotshoe crowd is going to enjoy Matolle Rd. through the Lost Coast, it's not exactly great pavement.

And I'm not going to mention the side roads, like Ruth-Zenia, that are actually much better than the others.

Uh, did I say that out loud?

You're right though, CA-128 is a great road! You should try CA-253 from Boonville to Ukiah...

ohio st rt 555-the triple nickel-insane curves and hills-great ride-take it easy-watch for gravel and farm animals

Let's make this simple. Get a map of the area where NC/SC/GA border. Throw a dart. Ride around within 50 miles of where it sticks and you WILL have fun.

I was standing at the NC end of the dragon about a year ago with my E-trex (basic) and it said I was 100 miles from home...... 5 hours later I arrived home and the next day my Left ankle was sore from shifting :brad
