Hi,

Does anyone know if the starter will spin with the sprag clutch after the bike is started and running?

When the bike is cold it makes a strange noise in the first 30 seconds or so, not every time , sounds like a fast spinning wobbly bearing. Last maybe 2 seconds.

Thanks

I won't say it can't but it clearly shouldn't. The release of the starter clutch should be instantaneous as soon as the engine is spinning faster than it was with the starter cranking it.

When they start to gum up they usually fail to engage, not the other way around.

Absolutely. I see no way the pawls can engage with the engine faster than starter driven. I can't say absolutely impossible but I don't see how - even gummed up.

Thanks , I will take a look at the relay. The noise happened so quick and I was on the bike , so now when I start it I push the button while I am kneeling next to it so I am ready to take a listen. Of course my mind goes crazy places, like the bearing on the output shaft is spinning in the case, stuff like that.

IF I suspected that the starter relay was sticking after I released the start button I would put a voltmeter on the starter to see if it was staying energized. No reason to take the tank off, remove the relay, open the cover, etc. My way is about 5 seconds to check without removing anything.

Hi,
update on noise, it looks like it was the alternator. After the bike sat for a week or so with no battery tender, when started it must have loaded the bad alternator. She made some strange noise that went away after a bit.

Thanks for the input
