Communication - Helmet Headsets

I'm using the UClear headset, with a twin for my wife on her bike, the HBC200HD. The thing we really like is the microphone is under the helmet's foam in front of your head, above the eyebrows. Clarity is very good as is range for our uses.

BUT - UClear's system will not allow me to stream music or have a second input when we are both in the "intercom" mode. If I am in the "Bluetooth" mode, no one else hooked in to talk with me, I can stream from both my phone and NAV VI.

I'd like to add a radar detector to my headset while we are both hooked up and talking in the "intercom" mode. Do you folks have a system you are using that will allow you to be hooked into a group communicating and still stream music, phone calls or such?

Anyone using Escort radar detectors with Bluetooth you have piped into you headsets?

I will very much appreciate your help.

Using a Sena 30k here and will connect everything you need!

So you can listen to streaming music and use your phone while in a mode where you are communication with others?

Do others hear your music or listen to your phone calls or just you?

How many sources of Bluetooth will your Sena 30K accept or connect?

Do you have to use a boom mic with the Sena? One of the things I really like about the UClear is the UClear mics are placed under the foam above your eyes - little or no wind noise.

Thanks for your help.

The Sena 30K is capable of doing more than you likely need and more than anyone should likely use while riding.

I've not upgraded to the 30K yet as my old Sena is still running strong, so I can't speak from personal experience on the way each feature works, but from what has been identified by users here, it does multi-task. Certainly with my older Sena the various functions work but they interupt each other until the priority one is finished. Nav is the highest priority, phone second, music third. It's my understanding that the Sena 30K and 20S EVO will simply reduce the audio stream when the new communication interupts and so you continue to hear it at a much reduced rate and if the incoming signal is a phone call the other end does not hear anything othert than you.

If you have non-BT items that you'd like to connect via BT, the Sena the Sena SR10 or SM10 can be added and provide a BT connection to non-BT items (older walkie-talkies, radar detectors, etc.)

The Sena mics are quite well insulated from wind noise, even using their boom mic with an open-faced helmet and no face-shield has provided good results.

I don't like using the boom mic with my modular helmet so I simply ran the wired mic (they come with both) to the front of the cheek-pad and put the included velcro patch there. Works fine for me, it is well out of the windstream, but as I said, the Sena units do a very good job of cancelling out wind noise.

If you have a Shoei Neotec (or other accommodating helmets), I also have a Sena 10u that integrates well with what you need.

While I really like the idea of the Sena 10U, 10Upad, SC1, etc., they don't work for me because:
  • I have more than one helmet
  • I don't want to be married to using the same helmet in the future

Because I use an external mount Sena, I simply clip the unit onto whichever helmet I plan on using. I'm at the point where I'll be changing one of my helmets (age) and will likely get an ADV helmet for dual-sport useage. I'll be able to simply buy a new mounting kit and snap the external Sena onto the new ADV helmet. You can use something like the Sena 20S/30K which is an external mount for any helmet or go the 10U route which is an internal mount system. However, the issue is, that there are pros and cons to both and which suits each rider best.

The 10U (internal) and that type of device is specific to helmet make and model.

I've got one Sena SMH10 external mount unit (rev-2 of their very first motorcycle unit) that I have had for over five years and it is still working fine. It has been mounted on three different helmets - I replace my helmets about every 5-years. I have another Sena external unit that I bought about 2-years ago and am thinking of upgrading to the new 30K. No need to be buying a seperate Sena for each helmet or every time your existing helmet ages out or gets damaged. No need to be restricted to what your new helmet will be.

For me, the limitations of an internal unit are not worth great packaging. Typically you get:
  • slight to significant reductions in capabilities - both of Sena newest advances 20S EVO and 30K have greater functionality
  • limited application - specific to make/model - you can't use it if you buy a new helmet that is a different model (helmet models get discontinued - Schuberth C3/C3-Pro replaced by C4 which doesn't take the C3/C3-Pro 10U).
