Chrome Headers?

Hey Fellas,

I have an '02 R1105R that I bought used about 4 months ago. In the process of making it "MY" bike, I started fiddling with the idea of chroming the headers. There was a lot of surface corrosion on the headers as well as some light pitting by the cylinder heads, but I cleaned that up. The problem is that in sanding off the rust, the stainless is, well, less than shiny.

Would chroming the headers be a decent idea? The removal seems pretty simple. My biggest question would be how bad would the bluing be? After sanding the headers a week ago, they have already turned a nice purple in places. Opinions?

You won't like the finished product if you chrome them; you might look at the jet hot coatings. There is a shiny silver that looks nearly chrome and stands up to the heat. But you could go with a color, instead, and really make it unique.

single wall header pipes will turn blue again if chromed

I Jet-Hot'd my RT and R. The black 2000 is what I went with, and as mentioned, they have a sterling silver that makes 'em look out of the crate new. they clean up well. I used a competitor up in Dallas and was not happy on the RT...just re-coated w/ Jet-Hot

BTW...the chrome alternator belt cover came from the previous owner!!!

Thanks guys,

Ok, now where can I get the headers jet-hotted?

Link in my last post, they have two locations and a third coming to PA soon. I sent mine to Pascagoula,MS. only one location is doing the Sterling silver at present. They send you a video with an estimate. My RT ,including the cat converter and clamps was $225, seems like the R was less, but, can't find the receipt this early in AM. Ther R parts and convereter were not as large. There are other ceramic coatings companies out there, but this is the real deal.
here it is again:

I didnt even think of getting the converter done. Thanks for the idea, Henzilla!

P.S. - Could you post a pic of the finished converter?

chrome headers

BigPolack:

My local specialist had the headers on one of his oiler GS's ceramic coated in a silver finish. They're gorgeous.
