So just joined the bmwmoa recently purchased a 1984 r100rs with supposed 11k original miles. I am going through the process of repairing a few little things on the bike. Noticed after warmed up I get the chirp at idle. Yes I have read a few forums about the problem. If it is in fact the rear main, can. I keep riding until I can or have someone else do the repairs.? Or could a new breather or another remidy fix the obnoxious noise?
All that being said can anyone recommend a good mechanic to do such a job in the California Bay Area. Not Scottie shop.!!!!
Thank you.

Welcome to the forum and the MOA! With so few miles, it could possibly be a rear main seal that is dried up and letting air escape. Try and determine where the noise is coming from. If it's up high on the engine, then maybe the breather; if lower than a main seal. The older worn out breathers used to make this noise, but after switching to the reed-style breather, not so much.

For service, you could check with Ted Porter at The Beemer Shop but he might not be doing much on Airheads these days. There's Brent Hansen in San Anselmo. Also Dave Gardner at Recommended Service in San Francisco.

Unfortunately, Dave Gardner retired and Ted Porter (for better or worse) concentrates on suspensions and no longer performs regular service. Try Greg Hutchenson at Airhead Adventures in Redwood City. https://airheadadventure.com/hours-directions/

Also, San Jose BMW might still work on Airheads. Tri-Valley Moto in Livermore will do some work, but the major work (e.g. head and tranny rebuilds) they ship out to the best of my knowledge.

Out of curiosity, where to you live? I'm in Walnut Creek.
