Cameras for motorcycle camping

A very good eye for a great shot.... Where's that? And no, I have no guess.

It's Denali. Up in AK. Also known as Mt. McKinley. And on one of the few
days it's usually visible :D

Took a bicycle tour a few years back that included a tour of the park.
Let me tell you that was one place I wished for longer glass. What a beautiful
place it was.

Ian

Yeah, seems like there's always a place for longer glass. I wanted to get the 100/400 zoom (then found out it was more expensive than my body&lens.. but I think either a 1.4 or more likely a 2.0 extender is gonna hit my rig next.

I was a bit pushed at Tintagel to get a shot of a couple of Kestrel's doing the death-dive hunts. I'd have really like to have had a tad better range. Some 'roosting' shots I just couldn't get close as I wanted. Ended up being a relative waste of 6 meg of attempt.

Overall though, I'm pretty pleased with what I walked out of there with. I took a ton of shyte experimental timed exposure shots in Glendalough, but I also took reference/insurance shots of the same scene in case the experiments failed. Which the majority did because I was a dumbass and left my tripod in the car. But a few of them I had a good enough brace to cancel out my huffin and puffin.

What I'd really like to do is head back to Mizen Head with a waterproof cover over the lense and body... around march, in a 100kt wind coming on the north atlantic, with driving surf.... a black diamond harness, three lifelines, and all the huevos I can muster.. and get some truly awe-inspiring surf shots.

Or you could watch the windsurfers

But long glass is never long enough :D

Here's another one taken at about 700mm. You might recognize the bird
as a northern harrier.

Now that's what I'm talking about. That is a damned nice shot. Damn....

I wish I had cameras like this when I was a kid. I used to go up to some cliffs near my friend's house... hawks would float thermals literally 8-10 feet in front of you...

Without looking at the EXIF data, anybody want to guess what this was shot
with?

Was that taken with a Linhof 4x5 camera thru a 250 5.6 zeiss sonnar lens mounted on a Gitzo mountaineer??

115 registered user: "The camera that has really caught my eye now is not even available yet, but should be in a few weeks. It is more rugged than the D70 and weighs about the same, but it has 10 MPs for even more resolution. It's the Nikon D200. Of course, all my Nikkor lenses work on all the Nikon DSLRs, even ancient lenses I bought in the 1960s! I really like Nikon's commitment to nonobsolescence."

Very nice photos...I like the western cardinal!
SO...have they listed a price on the d200 yet?? I have the 100 and was wondering if I would be able to use my vertical grip on it too! Thats the nice thing about the smaller body is with the addition of the power grip I have a large "pro" size camera with 2 power options and extra shutter release and a mic if I need it. I just saw an ad for it in Shutterbug. Looks great!
It might be my new weapon too if its price is under that of the D2X

Who cares, it's my new desktop. Thank, Ian. Beautiful. Me, I'm perfectly happy with my Cannon SD400, fits in my pocket and reminds me of where I've been. ;)

B&H has the Nikon D200 listed for about $1,700, which is a whole chunk 'o change less than the 12.4 MP, $5,000 D2x:

Professional reviewers I have read seem to prefer it over the D2x because of its size and weight and nearly comparable performance -- not to mention built-in flash.

First deliveries said to be at the end of this month. I checked "notify when in stock" on B&H's D200 web page.

Almost. The CoolPix 950, handheld :D

Which might surprise some of you as it is an early model digital. Which goes
to show that it's not so much the arrow as it is the Indian.

Although technology does help but it's not the most important thing.

Jeff, I'd be interested in your comments on the D200 if you do pick one up.
To me, it looks a lot like the gap between consumer and professional has
become much smaller (and cheaper).

Truer words have never been spoken. Anybody can pick up a guitar pick. There's only one Alex Lifeson.

And yes... the difference is largely in knowledge and experience, confidence.. and job description. Whether trained or intuitive, a professional has either a deeper understanding of the equipment (duh) and how to use it... or is just one of those talented people who can pick up an instrument, and with a minimum of fuss, play like they were born to it.

I'd love to take some time one of these days and take a bit of legit instruction in photography, but time is notoriously short.

That's it, go ahead, rub it in! :laugh

They don't make a Nikon D70 anymore. It was replaced by a D70S, which is a great camera for the money. You can always get better, but you have to be willing to pony up the bucks.

In days of old, you had to wait (unless you developed your own) for results.
Sometimes as much as a week. Now, you chimp. What's that? Don't like the
shot? Bin it and start over.

But each of us know what composition we like. There are some basic rules to
follow but the best is the rule of thirds. Divide the frame into thirds
horizontally and vertically. Where those lines intersect is usually a good
place for your subject to be. If it's a road and there's a rider on it, just make
sure your rider has a place to go (visually that is). Try at all costs to avoid
putting your subject smack in the middle. Check the horizon's level and then
click away. A quick check of the display will tell you whether you got what
you wanted--if you have the capability, you can make a more technical
check but if you're shooting in auto, this is probably not really necessary.

Good luck and happy snapping!

Ian

You'll have to let us know. This is the same camera selling at B&H for roughly $4,520! Was it new or used? Good luck, hope it's what you expect.

Thanks! Well, I'm not sure if it's new or not. I assume its not. Description also said it comes with new 800 flash. We'll see...!

I knew it

Well, like I thought...it was just too good to be true ;) The emails were getting weirder as we went along. the seller was from Seattle and in one email said that the check was to be sent to Florida to his mother in law and gave me the address. The sellers contact info did include a phone number so I called and discovered that the seller didnt have any idea what was going on. He had no camera and hadnt used ebay for quite some time. Thank God I didn't send off my $$
