Boot Choices

Combat Lites with wedge sole because I wanted to feel the heel on the footpeg. I use Leather Lube from Cabelas and have had no problems with wet feet.

Boot insoles

Raketa60.. (dunno your real name)..

Great idea - any source for these? I haven't seen them in the usual drug-store Dr. Scholls inserts section (which is what I use now..)

I bought the Sofsole insoles online from Amazon. Here's the manufacturer's product site: http://www.sofsole.com/ProductDetails.aspx?pid=1&g=m&n=1&DetailID=1 I'm sure you can find them at a local running shoe store or just get them from Amazon. They feel wonderful and are only $20.

+1 on the BMW Goretex(tm) all-round boots.

They wear very well (don't peel like those cheap-a$$ sportbike boots), are very waterproof, and pretty comfortable.

Price isn't bad either, for BMW branded gear...

Daytona Road Star GTX all the way. Easily the best made boot in the business. Combats are a little more rugged, not as waterproof, and a little hotter. The Daytonas have some more modern foot protection than the Combats, but they are not MX boots. I still use my BMW Transitions for shorter rides, but my feet can't hack them for more than three hours. I have the same issue with the MX style boots so for long road rides its the Daytonas. When I was at the Iron Butt checkpoint in Orange County I noticed that half the riders were wearing Combats and maybe 20% in Daytonas. The Daytonas require no break in period, look pretty good, are very comfortable, come in narrow and wide sizes, are easy to walk in, are so well made they inspire pride of ownership, and best of all they are sold by Helimot. You can't beat Helmut at Helimot for customer service.

Made en der Fatherland, the legendary boots of Germany....:german

I like the roadstar gtx so much I have two pair! That leave me one to wear while the other is at Helimot's getting re-soled.

Chippewa boots for wide feet.

Anyone have a recommendation for a good all around sport/touring boot?

I have wide (EE) feet, and found few bike boots that were comfortable. I'm currently breaking in a pair of Chippewa 12" Black Rally boots, #27862. Made in USA, can be resoled, available in wide widths. I paid $150 locally, available on line for $150 - $200. So far, so good.

In your experience with Daytona boots, do they seem to fit big, small, or somewhere in the middle? I'm typically an American 11, and either a 45 or 46 Euro depending on the boot. I want to get a pair of the Daytona Spirit XCRs from Helimot, but I don't want to get into a period of paying to ship large packages back and forth because something's too big or too small. I've done that before with boots and its a PITA that I'd rather not repeat. What's your experience?

I wear a euro 46 in most shoes. The roadstar 46 fits perfect. That's the length measurement. My issue with boots has always been the width as I've got a skinny little foot. The roadstar comes in narrow, normal, and wide widths. The narrow boot is one of the few that fit me.

It looks to me like the "Way Mega Rain" or "Way Rain" is fundamentally the same boot as the Thunder was. Side zip with velcro flap, waterproof membrane, etc. There may well be construction detail differences, but functionally they look the same.

I have a pair of On Roads. Had and wore out a pair of Thunder. I liked the convenience of the gusseted zipper, but still often wear the On Road boots now instead of a cheaper different brand I bought to replace the Thunder.

Paul, I am anxious to buy a new set of boots, but New Enough will not have my size On Roads until early December. Since it sounds like you have had experience with the On Roads as well as the Way Rain style, would you suggest that it would be worth the wait for the On Roads rather than getting the Way Rains now??? I really would not mind both, but the budget will not allow it.

BTW, I ride @14K per year, year round, to & from work and take 600 mile trips often.

Thanks, Jim

In my experience, the Daytona boots fit true to size. My foot measures 11A and their 45 narrow boot was the correct size. If you actually get your foot measured in one those shoe store measuring thingies, you can fit yourself to a Daytona size. Helimot provides the USA-Euro conversion, you just have to know your actual measurement. Several of their boots come in extra wide widths.

With Daytona boots, seeing is believing. Once you see the craftsmanship, you will be sold if the boot suits your needs. They also offer the Evo Sport, which is a fully armored sport bike boot that got the top reviews in Motorrad. If my foot was wider I would have bought them instead, but they don't make them narrow enough for me.

Another vote from me for the BMW All Around touring boot. It is comfortable on the bike and off the bike for walking around. Waterproof and breathes well in warm weather.

I also like the TCX Jupiter 2 boots for commuting or short rides. This boot is a an above the ankle style and looks a bit like a "stylized" hiking boot. These fit and feel like running shoes.

You may wish to consider Cruiserworks boots. They are motorcycle specific and all are waterproof. They are several styles, laceup, zip up, pull on, etc. I've had mine for about 7 years and they are still waterproof and still look pretty good. Also, they can be resoled.

New Boots Arrived Today

My Combat Lights arrived today. Tomorrow they go for their first ride. I tried them on this evening and boy are they a substantial boot. Breaking them in will be important.

Ya know, it was about 25 years ago when I wandered into a fire station while on patrol and observed that all the firemen were wearing Chippewas, so I asked them about the boots...shortly thereafter, I bought a pair on their recommendation, and haven't been disappointed... Later, while living in Denver, I got a pair of insulated Chips, same thing...wonderful boots...

You can't go wrong with these boots...naw, they ain't real stylish, and they ain't fancy motorcycle boots, but you aren't limited to wearing them while riding...and if you get the appropriate boot, you can get a real good spit shine out of 'em!!! Or...the trusties can get a real good spit shine outta 'em!!!

sgtbill,
Follow the break in procedure and don't over do the waterproofing! Go ride...

FWIW--I (and I suspect many of you) got an Email today from Aerostich stating 20% off certain combinations of Combats and Combat Lites.

Check the website for more.

Sole Wear

My vote is for the BMW All Around Boot! Wonderful boot!

I've worn thru the soles of my BMW ConTour boots far too quickly. They're not off the bike much, but when you get to a rally you're going to walk. They've been wonderful in extreme weather, but I don't care to dump money into another pair of boots that die after two riding seasons. I'm told they can't be re-soled.:cry
I think I've narrowed my choices down to the Combat Light and the All Around.

Can someone relate their experience with sole wear on these boots?

Thanks
