Kawasaki World Superbike Team keeps busy

BMW Motorrad Motorsport has been busy also. Along with the testing story previously posted Troy Corser has been out promoting the S1000RR in various ways during the WSBK vacation. Ruben Xaus has been healing. I have not seen any stories about how that is going for him. I have been looking hard for several days. Have any of you seen anything?

RUBEN SITS OUT THE ÔÇÿRING, SO TROY GETS A NEW TEAM MATE.
This yearÔÇÖs eleventh round of the Superbike World takes place at the Nurburgring circuit in Germany and will see a new face in Team BMW Motorrad Motorsport. Ruben Xaus has been advised by his doctors not to race this coming weekend, so the team are giving a chance to young Briton Richard Cooper to ride with Troy Corser.

Twenty-six year old Richard has been racing in the British Superstock 1000 Championship this season, but also had a one-off British Superbike ride at Mallory Park, when he finished a superb 5th after leading the race for three laps. He is no stranger to BMW, having raced the BMW HP2 Sport in the World Endurance Championship last year and has also been a regular competitor in the BMW Boxer Cup. He tested the S 1000 RR racebike at the Eurospeedway Lausitz recently, but the N??rburgring will be his first ever WSBK race.

Troy
I like the Nurburgring and it has been a good circuit for me in the past and, after a recent tests and the race in Brno in the last round, I am really looking forward to this coming weekend. There is going to be a lot of interest and attention on us this weekend because it is the teamÔÇÖs ÔÇÿhomeÔÇÖ race and all of us want to do well for our fans and our sponsors.

It is a shame that Ruben cannot race this weekend but IÔÇÖm sure that the right decision has been made. ItÔÇÖs far better for him to return when he is stronger and fitter. IÔÇÖm happy that Richard is stepping in this weekend for Ruben. I have met him a few times, especially at Brands Hatch recently. HeÔÇÖs young, fast and good prospect for the future and IÔÇÖm sure heÔÇÖll do a good job for the team. IÔÇÖll give him whatever helps he needs and although heÔÇÖs young (and looks even younger!) heÔÇÖs pretty experienced already, so maybe he wonÔÇÖt need it!

ItÔÇÖs a great honour to be asked by the team to ride in place of Ruben and I will do my very best for sure. This ride is like a dream come true, but I am under no illusions about the massive task waiting for me this weekend. I have never raced at the Nurburgring before, but at least I have tested the S 1000 RR racebike, so I have some knowledge of it before going out for my first laps.
My first impressions of the bike were very good and I was surprised and pleased how smooth it felt and how good the power delivery was. I will be under no pressure from the team this weekend and all they want me to do is ride the bike and try and enjoy the experience.

Ruben and I are very different physically - I am a lot shorter and weigh a lot less - so my first job is to get the bike set up for me. ItÔÇÖs not nice stepping into somebody elseÔÇÖs shoes, and I wish Ruben a speedy recovery, but this is a great opportunity for me and I will be giving it my best shot.

Ruben
I saw my specialist today (Monday) and he advised me not to race and, for once in my life, I am going to be sensible and do what a doctor says! It was always going to be difficult getting fit enough to race at the ÔÇÿRing and although my physio and rehabilitation has been going better than expected, I think the decision not to race is the right one. I didnÔÇÖt want to come to the Nurburgring and ride at only 80%. I am still on crutches at the moment and cannot put my full body weight on my right leg, so it is better that I sit this one out because I will then have another three weeks and be much stronger for the Imola race at the end of September. It would've been a disaster, if I raced this weekend and did some more damage, but I shall miss getting on the bike for sure - especially as it is the teamÔÇÖs ÔÇÿhomeÔÇÖ race. I would like to wish the team all the best this weekend and hope that Richard does well and enjoys himself.

The calendar says it is September but I feel like a kid and itÔÇÖs December 24th. I have been staring at the package from BMW Motorrad Motorsport that is under the tree. When my parents werenÔÇÖt looking I picked it up to feel its weight and gently shook it to see if I could figure out what is in it. I know there is a race in there, Uncle BMW promised me one called Nurburgring. My Japanese and Italian friends are getting races too. They are richer than Uncle BMW when it comes with racing so they will probably get podiums and one of them will undoubted get a victory and taunt me with it.

The package is still unwrapped and as usual I find I wonder. Could there be a front row or even a Superpole in it? I would really like a podium but I would suffer through one of those kisses with extra red lipstick Aunt BMW can give if it meant there was a top 5 finish. I know I am dreaming. A race will be nice. I really like Uncle BMWÔÇÖs Superbike races.

TROY THIRD IN THE WET!
Both practice and qualifying sessions took place in the wet at the Nurburgring today, but Troy rode superbly and took third position despite the difficult conditions. Richard Cooper, his team mate this weekend, managed to embarrass many of the established stars by finishing in eleventh position - all on his World Superbike debut. Briton Jonathan Rea Honda) took provisional pole, with a time of 2:11.278, with fellow countryman Tom Sykes (Yamaha) second.

Troy - 3rd, 2:12.086
It was full wets all day today and conditions were not so easy. Halfway through the afternoon session it rained so hard and there was a lot of standing water around and it was dangerous to stay out so I pulled in instead. ItÔÇÖs funny because this track has two different surfaces - the old part and the newer part - and the grip level in the wet on the old part is actually better than the new part. I am quite happy because I feel that the connection between the throttle and the engine now feels very direct and so the bike is easier to ride. The power delivery feels more smooth and I am really looking forward to riding the bike in the dry - hopefully tomorrow. I had a bit of a slide on my final lap and lost some time, otherwise I wouldÔÇÖve ended second for sure.

Richard - 11th, 2: 13.391
I am really enjoying this experience and itÔÇÖs so nice to walk into the garage and feel that everybody is 100% behind me. That makes me happy and that makes my job easier. I supposed the rain played into my hands a bit, but it felt good to go faster than a lot of the regular riders. I crashed because of the standing water in one part of the track in first practice. The back end just came round without warning and I couldnÔÇÖt save it. IÔÇÖve got a bit of a sore backside, but otherwise IÔÇÖm OK.

I am more than happy how today has gone and think both riders have done a superb job. Troy has returned from the summer break smiling and that is giving the whole team a boost. This is RichardÔÇÖs first WSBK race and he has done an excellent job. His crash was just a slow speed fall in difficult conditions and couldÔÇÖve happened to anybody. He is very professional and is working very well with all the guys and today he should be happy because he finished in front of many of the top guys.

TodayÔÇÖs practice and qualifying sessions at the Nurburgring took place in the wet, with the afternoon qualifying blighted by heavy and even hailstones! Despite the appalling conditions Troy rode superbly and ended the day with the third fastest time. And it so easily couldÔÇÖve been second! On his final lap of the day, Troy suffered a rear end slide at the final chicane and lost some time. Were it not for that, Troy wouldÔÇÖve taken second spot for sure. Briton Jonathan Rea (Honda) took provisional pole, with a time of 2:11.278, with fellow countryman Tom Sykes (Yamaha) second. Troy - 3rd, 2:12.086 Conditions werenÔÇÖt so good today and all I can say is that it was wet! Actually the grip level was not too bad, but definitely a bit better on the old surface than the new part. The rain really came down about halfway through qualifying and I pulled in because the standing water made it too dangerous to continue. The bike seems to have made another little step forward since Brno and it is easier to ride than earlier in the season for sure. My connection feeling between the throttle and the engine is now very direct and the power delivery feels nice and smooth and I am enjoying riding the bike, even in these conditions! I reckon I wouldÔÇÖve finished with the second fastest lap, if it had not been for a bit of a slide on my final lap. I hope tomorrow is dry because I am looking forward to riding the bike flat-out and seeing how much the team have improved the bike since last time out.

TROY MISSES THE FRONT ROW BY A WHISKER!

Team BMW Motorrad Motorsport rider Troy Corser lost his chance of a possible front row grid position when Noriyuki Haga (Ducati) inadvertently got in his way towards the end of the final Superpole. Troy had qualified for Superpole in 19th place, but then stormed his way up through Superpole 1 with the fourth fastest time. In Superpole 2, he surprised everybody by posting the second quickest time and the scene was set for BMW’s first front row of the season. But, in Superpole 3, Troy got baulked by Haga right at the end and the time lost was enough to leave Troy with the sixth fastest lap and a place on row two instead.

Troy’s young team mate Richard Cooper failed to qualify for Superpole because of a lack of dry set-up time. After yesterday’s rain-filled sessions, today saw a dry track and Richard had to find a dry set-up right from scratch. But the young Briton ran out of time in the 45-minute qualifying session and was forced to sit out Superpole. Noriyuki Haga took Superpole, his first of the season, with Jonathan Rea (Honda) second, Leon Haslam (Honda) third and Michel Fabrizio (Ducati) fourth.

Troy - 6th, 1:56.296
Towards the end of Superpole 3, I was really going for it and looking for our first front row of the season. I saw Nori cruising and thought he’d keep off the racing line as I dived into a turn. I was committed and right on the white line when suddenly he drifted across and was in my way. I’m sure that I brushed his leathers as I tried to modify my line and for a while it was a bit of a scary moment. I’m not sure if I would’ve got front row if I didn't have that moment, but it would’ve been a close thing.

But, I’m happy with the bike and feel that the team have made a step up since Brno. Certainly the bike feels like a bike should and the general feel is more consistent. This isn’t a fun track in the wet, so I am hoping that it will be dry tomorrow so that I can fight for good results.

Richard - 26th, 1:59.602
I am very disappointed with my position, especially as yesterday had gone so well. The problem was that today was dry, so we had to start with a completely new set-up, try and improve it, then finish in the top twenty - all in 45 minutes! Basically I went faster and faster throughout the qualifying session, but we just ran out of time. If we could’ve had another session, I’m sure I would’ve qualified for Superpole. Certainly I set my quickest lap of the day in the untimed afternoon session, so I know improvement was always on the cards.

Today was the first time I’ve ever tried a ‘launch control’ and I thought it was great! From my position on the grid, I’m going to need a good start, so any help is good help. It’s going to be a hard couple of races tomorrow and I will have to try and fight my way through a lot of riders. But, this is a long track, so we’ll see how far up the field we can get in the two twenty-lappers.

Today has confirmed our results in Brno and shows that we are going in the right direction for sure. I expected Troy’s result today, but I feel sorry for Richard because he only had forty-five minutes this morning to find a good dry set-up and go fast enough to qualify for Superpole. That wasn’t sufficient time, but he continued his improvement in the afternoon untimed session and went quicker anyway. We’re very happy with the job he has done and I believe he’s got the talent to be a top Superbike rider in the future.

Nurburgring (Germany) - Final qualifying: SO CLOSE TO FRONT ROW FOR TROY!

Troy ended Superpole agonisingly close to a place on the front row of the grid after another positive day for the S 1000 RR on the track. Just as if it looked as if he would give BMW their first front row of the season he was thwarted by Noriyuki Haga’s actions. Troy had stormed through Superpoles 1 and 2, setting the second fastest time in Superpole 2 and a front row grid spot was looking a distinct possibility, until the last couple of minutes. As he approached a corner, Troy saw Nori off from the racing line and seemingly cruising. As he tipped the bike in and went for the white line, Nori inexplicably came back on to the racing line. Troy had to correct his trajectory and the time lost doing that was just about what might have taken Troy to his, and BMW’s first, front row grid spot of the season. To make matters worse, Noriyuki Haga took Superpole, his first of the season. Second was Jonathan Rea (Honda), with Leon Haslam (Honda) third and Michel Fabrizio (Ducati) fourth. Troy - 6th, 1:56.296 Well that was pretty close - in more ways than one! I’m sure that I brushed Nori’s bike or leathers in the process and he must have felt my presence because we were that close! Any closer and we both might’ve gone down. I guess he didn’t realise I was on a hot lap and so close because I don’t think he would done his action deliberately. Anyway, sixth is not so bad, especially as I am happy with my bike. I think the team have made a step forward since Brno and I was pretty happy with the bike there! The bike feels much more consistent now and it’s easier to ride. My qualifying tyre in Superpole 2 worked really well and we used the same type in Superpole 3, but it just didn’t feel as good. After the long summer break, I have been looking forward to riding my bike again and the progress the team keep making gives me a lot of optimism for the future. Spies battles to race 1 win from Haga

Ben Spies (Yamaha World Superbike) notched up his 12th win of the season at the end of a nail-biting scrap with his championship rival Noriyuki Haga (Ducati Xerox), reducing the gap at the top to two points. The Japanese rider powered away to the best possible start, but Spies managed to recover by the mid-point, when he took over at the front. With a couple of laps to go before the chequered flag, Haga made a slight error and the Texan was able to cut loose to take the win. Third place went to Carlos Checa (Hannspree Ten Kate Honda), who held off his team-mate Jonathan Rea for the final podium slot. There was another terrific battle for fifth place, between Max Biaggi (Aprilia Racing), Leon Haslam (Stiggy Racing Honda) and Michel Fabrizio (Ducati Xerox), who finished in that order. Troy Corser scored a positive eighth place for BMW, with the Australian running in fourth for much of the race before dropping away in the final stages. Stand-in rider Karl Muggeridge brought the first Suzuki Alstare BRUX machine home in 12th, but both Kawasaki riders were forced into retirement. Makoto Tamada was involved in an incident shortly after the start together with John Hopkins (Stiggy Racing Honda), and they were both taken to Adenaiu hospital with concussion.

TroyÔÇÖs young team mate Richard Cooper failed to qualify for Superpole because of a lack of dry set-up time. After yesterdayÔÇÖs rain-filled sessions, today saw a dry track and Richard had to find a dry set-up right from scratch. But the young Briton ran out of time in the 45-minute qualifying session and was forced to sit out Superpole. Noriyuki Haga took Superpole, his first of the season, with Jonathan Rea (Honda) second, Leon Haslam (Honda) third and Michel Fabrizio (Ducati) fourth.

A confusing turn of phrase. The bikes have various set-ups based on the conditions and the rider. In this case Cooper and the team mechanics were not able to find a set-up that worked for him which allowed him to turn in a time fast enough to qualify for the Superpole round. In the parlance this means he 'lacked a dry set-up time.'

SUPERB 8TH AND 6TH FOR TROY. DISAPPOINTMENT FOR RICHARD.

Although the rains held off at the Nurburgring today, the eleventh round of this yearÔÇÖs Superbike World Championship took place mainly in gloomy conditions. Troy made good starts in both races and took eighth place in race one and then followed that up with a strong sixth in race two. Richard Cooper, standing in for Ruben Xaus, also made good starts but crashed out of both 20-lappers, fortunately without injury.
The first race was won by American Ben Spies (Yamaha), with Noriyuki Haga (Ducati) second and Carlos Checa (Honda) third. Haga then led race two, but crashed out of contention after just four laps, leaving Jonathan Rea (Honda) to battle it with out Spies for the spoils of victory. Spies did his utmost, but Rea managed to take the win by seven tenths of a second. Third went to Checa, but HagaÔÇÖs DNF means Spies now leads the championship by eighteen points.

Troy - Race 1: 8th, Race 2: 6th
Generally I think this was a good day for us and we were able to hold our ground after Brno. We are now dicing with the top guys and that shows how much we have improved since the start of the season. The bike is easier to ride, more comfortable, more consistent and IÔÇÖm having fun riding it! Now I can put the laps together without a problem.
I got a good start in the first race and was a solid fourth for the first ten laps. Then the rear started spinning a bit when I picked up the throttle and I could not prevent some of the guys getting past me.
We made a bit of a change for the second race and I very nearly got the holeshot! It was good to be in contention with the leaders for a while and now I am waiting for the team to make the next step up, so that I can consistently challenge the leaders. But the main thing is that we are still improving. Before the day began, I thought IÔÇÖd be about the top six or so and I think our results were very good when you consider that there are eight or so factory bikes out there and theyÔÇÖve all got more experience than us.

Richard - Race 1: DNF: Race 2: DNF
To say that I am disappointed would be a huge understatement. IÔÇÖm not known as a crasher, so to have three in one weekend is rather rare for me. I made good starts in both races. I was sixteenth after one lap in race one and seventeenth after the first lap of race two. I felt comfortable on the bike, so it was a bit of a shock to crash in the final chicane after only five laps in race one. Maybe I was just pushing a bit too hard and the front didnÔÇÖt like it.
I managed sixteen laps in the second race before having a very slow speed crash. Once again, I felt settled on the bike and was just concentrating on my racing. I hit a bump at the Dunlop hairpin and the bike just folded and went down. The crash was so slow that I didnÔÇÖt even make the end of the track! I am bitterly disappointed with how things went today because I am sure that I could finished in the points in both races and that wouldÔÇÖve been a fantastic achievement on my World Superbike debut. Nevertheless, I have enjoyed my time here this weekend and would like to thank the whole team for all their help and support. Everybody has been amazing and I have been made to feel a part of the team, not just a stand-in for another rider.

TodayÔÇÖs results (for Troy anyway) are more or less what we expected with these engine specs. We made the engines for this weekend for reliability and so a bit of top speed and power was sacrificed. Nonetheless, Troy did a superb job and, by running with the top guys, showed that we can now fight with the big boys OK. I think our bike is maybe a little harder to ride than the other bikes, but we know which direction to take and we will improve the bike for Imola for sure. I feel very sorry for Richard. HeÔÇÖs had to do so much finding a dry set-up in the limited track time and learn the circuit as well. HeÔÇÖs a very easy rider to work with and I am sure heÔÇÖs going to do well in the future.

Nurburgring (Germany) - Race: TROY FIGHTS WITH THE ÔÇÿRING LEADERS

Troy finished eighth in the first race today and then a strong sixth in the second to show that the BMW S 1000 RRÔÇÖs recent improvement is no flash in the pan. But, more importantly maybe, was the fact that Troy was able to fight with the front runners in both 20-lappers. He was fourth for the first ten laps of race one and wouldÔÇÖve maintained that position had it not been for the rear spinning a little in the second half of the race. He made such a good start in race two that he nearly got the holeshot, but Noriyuki Haga (Ducati) and Carlos Checa (Honda) just about managed to get in front before the drag downhill to turn one. The day started eventually when race one was red-flagged on the opening lap, due to a pile-up of riders in the first left-hander. The field lined up again, minus John Hopkins (Honda) and this time there was no drama on the first lap. Haga and Spies (Yamaha) disputed the lead for most of the race, but in the end Spies took the win by nearly four seconds. Third went to Carlos Checa, with Rea (Honda) fourth, Biaggi (Aprilia) fifth and Haslam (Honda) sixth. Haga crashed out early in race two and Rea took over the lead. Spies tried to pass him, but Rea kept in front to record his second win of the season. Spies took second, with Carols Checa again third and HagaÔÇÖs DNF now means that Spies leads the championship by 18 points. Troy - Race 1: 8th, Race 2: 6th IÔÇÖm having fun on the bike! ItÔÇÖs been a while since I said that this season, but our recent step up at Brno has carried on here and thereÔÇÖs more to come. The bike is easier to ride and is definitely more comfortable. The team have done really well and now the bike feels much more consistent - itÔÇÖs like a normal bike! I got the results today that I more or less expected, but it was fun to run with the leaders for a while (half distance in the first race) and I know thatÔÇÖs going to happen more often now. I made good starts in both races and very nearly got the holeshot in one! There is still more work to do on the bike of course and today I sort of felt that we were missing out a bit on mid-range acceleration. IÔÇÖm sure the boys are working on a solution to that and I am looking forward to getting back on the bike in Imola in a couple of weeks time and fighting with the leaders again. See ya, Troy
