The Honda move is limited to US road racing so far with no hints in other markets. Honda was a big question mark for 2009 as a result of their conflicts with AMA/DMG proposed rules changes and more. Readers should be careful what they read into this move beyond what can be taken at face value.

Two scoops in one post!

It will be exciting to see Spies moving up to MotoGP next year, together with Edwards they could be the most competetive satellite team on the track; better than a couple of factory efforts. I wish him great success, and hope he does well enough to earn a factory bike after a good "rookie" season.
Go Ben!:usa

Honda pulling out of american road racing shouldn't come as a surprise. The series is so screwed up after years of mismanagement, culminating in this seasons ridiculous NASCAR-like rules, confusing classes, and favoritism, it's hard to think of anything they're doing right.

Quick:
What's the premier class in american road racing?
Why no liter-class superbikes at Daytona?
Now which class has the 600s in it?
But what's this other class with 600s, and V-twins over 1,100 cc's; and which ones are modified how much?
Who's the top rider in each class?
I thought that guy was in that other class, wait a minute, which one is this again?
Why is that car on the track?

Honda isn't turning it's back on american race fans, they're just responding to american race fans turning away from (or being turned off by) AMA-DMG managed road racing.

I am sorry to see Spies leave WSBK. I know he has wanted a MotoGP ride for ever, I just like the WSBK series more than MotoGP right now.

US road racing has all sorts of problems. If they do in fact eventually bring the rules and classes in line with the FIM regs the US could be interesting once again.

2009 Superbike World Championship
Preview: Round 12, Imola, Italy - 27th September

TROY AND RUBEN LOOKING FORWARD TO IMOLA

The twelfth round of this yearÔÇÖs Superbike World Championship takes place at the Enzo e Dino Ferrari circuit in Imola, Italy, and will be the first time the series is at the track since 2006. Since then, modifications to the circuit have been made, especially on the approach to the chicane before the front straight. The top teams tested the new layout in mid-July and the revisions to the track drew mixed comments. Troy took a runner up spot in 2005, but Ruben has even better memories of the circuit as he took a superb double victory there in 2003.

Troy

Although we have tested at Imola this year - on the new layout - there is still lots to learn and do. For me the new approach to the front straight is not as good as before and the final chicane could cause problems. I am looking forward to riding my bike again as I believe that we have made really good progress recently and I want to see how this progress continues in Imola. Hopefully the weather will be better than the Nurburgring and we will get a good crowd and a good result.

Ruben
My physiotheraphy and rehabilitation has gone very well and I think I will be able to race in Imola. Just before Imola, I will get on a bike and see how my leg behaves and how it feels when I get off the bike. In the normal scheme of things, I should really not be on a bike at all before Portimao, but everything has gone well so far and I am very eager to get on my bike and race. I saw the progress at Brno before I crashed and I am itching to get on my bike and see how much progress the team have made since then. There is no absolutely final decision about Imola yet, but I am very, very hopeful.

Berti Hauser (Director - BMW Motorrad Motorsport)
Hopefully, our normal team will be back in action at Imola and it will be a pleasure to have Ruben back and interesting to hear what he says about the bike since Brno. Until he rides the bike, we do not know how strong he will be, but we know that his rehabilitation has gone very well and we know how keen he is to get on the bike again. These last three races are very important to all of us and we are aiming to end the last part of the season in very positive frame of mind and build on that for next season.

Friday warm-up practice is underway. I am having a bit of trouble with live timing. Corser is the early leader just a few minutes into the session, which means nothing. Xaus is not listed on the rider board at this time nor is a second BMW bike. Stay tuned. I will try and post before noon central but this evening for sure.

Racing at Imola has been stopped to deal with an oily track. Warm weather is being blamed for bringing oil to the track surface making it too slippery for riders to run on. Track officials stopped practice five minutes into the session and will 'delay' the weekend schedule until they figure out a way to deal with it.

Action on the track did get underway once again. It is not clear if Superbike Friday Qualifying will take place or it will be a single qualifying session on Saturday. The press has mixed reports and there is no announcement yet on the WSBK site.

Corser finished 10th in the delayed practice session, Fabrizio Checa and Spies were the top three riders when the session ended. Xaus is racing and finished the practice session in 16th.

The WSBK site just recycled. Superbike qualifying will be all done on Saturday. First qualifying will begin at 10:45 am Imola time and then Superpole is scheduled to begin as always at 3PM local track time.

Round 12, Imola, Italy
Circuit: 4.936 kms Conditions: Dry, sunny 25C.
Friday qualifying, 25th September

FIRST PRACTICE ABANDONED, BUT TROY AND RUBEN HAPPY.

Today’s first practice at the Enzo e Dino Ferrari circuit in Imola was abandoned after less than two laps due to the lack of grip at the 4.936 kilometre track. The slippery track caused a crash straightaway and all the riders rode straight back to the pits after numerous slides. The officials set about cleaning the track, but it was only at 17.45 that the riders were able to go out for a free practice session. Although the track was in much better condition, there were still areas of concern and the lap times were down on when the teams tested here in July.
After nearly eight weeks out of action, Ruben was back in the saddle. Despite having broken the top of his femur and surgery that required three screws inserted into it and his hip, he rode superbly today and was happy to end with the 16th fastest time. Troy Corser and his mechanics spent the sole session of the day trying out a variety of settings on the traction control and throttle feel, but still managed to finish in the top ten. Michel Fabrizio (Ducati) ended the day fastest, with Carlos Checa (Honda) second and Ben Spies (Yamaha) third.

Troy - 10th, 1:50.876

I’m pretty happy to be in the top ten, considering the circumstances, and we were able to try out quite a few things and end with some positive ideas about what we want to do tomorrow. The first time we all went out was incredible because the track was unbelievably slippery. It felt like the front tyre had suddenly gone flat and it was impossible to ride. I lost count of the number of slides I had - in just two laps! There was a Touring Car race here last weekend and if felt as if a lot of diesel was on the track, but I don’t think I’ve ever had this kind of feeling on a track that was not wet! They cleaned the track and cancelled all the sessions except us and Supersport and we went out late - at 5.45 pm! The grip was definitely better, but there are still three areas where the grip is poor. I hope that the conditions improve tomorrow, but already we are at a disadvantage to most teams because we really need as much track time as possible.

Ruben - 16th, 1:51.527

I am very happy with my performance this afternoon, but I would have liked to have had the other session to get back into the groove properly. I haven’t ridden for almost eight weeks and it takes time to get back into the swing of things and this is what I tried to do today. The track was incredibly slippery when we tried to start the first session and it was obvious that it needed cleaning before we could ride. After the hour long session, my hip and leg don’t feel so bad. My arms are a bit sore because of all the concentration required in the areas of the track that are still slippery, but I feel very positive about the rest of the weekend.

Berti Hauser - Team BMW Motorrad Motorsport Director
Firstly, I am very happy to welcome Ruben back and see that he is getting back into it so easily. I am happy that he took things steadily and rode using his mind and we are all waiting to hear his comments on the bike when he has pushed it a bit harder. The decision to abandon the first practice was correct. So many riders complained about the track and there could’ve been many injuries if the session had gone ahead. It’s strange to start your first real practice at 17.45, but that’s the way it had to be. We lost a session today and that puts us at a disadvantage, but we will battle away tomorrow and see what we can achieve.

Friday qualifying
1 Fabrizio (ITA-Ducati) 1:49.895, 2 C Checa (ESP-Honda) 1:50.125, 3 Spies (USA-Yamaha) 1:50.213, 4 Rea (GBR-Honda) 1:50.308, 5 Biaggi (ITA-Aprilia) 1:50.515, 6 Kagayama (JPN-Suzuki) 1:50.516, 10 Troy Corser (AUS-BMW Motorrad Motorsport) 1:50.876, 16 Ruben Xaus (ESP-BMW Motorrad Motorsport) 1:51.769

Imola, Italy - First qualifying: FIRST PRACTICE LOST, BUT TROY ENDS WITH A TOP TEN
September 24, 2009, 7:00:00 PM

Today’s first practice at the Enzo e Dino Ferrari circuit in Imola was a bit of a farce to say the least. Less than two laps of the scheduled one-hour long session had been completed when a crash by Briton Tom Sykes and many near falls caused all the riders to return to their pits wondering why the 4.936 kilometre track was so slippery. Most riders reported that it had felt like riding on ice, but as the temperature was over 25 C, this could not have been the cause. A WTCC race had taken place at the track the week before and the common theory was that there was a lot of diesel on the track and that’s why the surface was so slippery. The officials started a clean-up operation, but the time taken to make the surface ready meant that the first free practice had to be cancelled, leaving time only for one practice at the end of the day at 17.45. Although the track was in better condition for that practice, Troy and most of the riders felt some areas of the track were still very slippery. Michel Fabrizio (Ducati) ended the day fastest, with Carlos Checa (Honda) second and Ben Spies (Yamaha) third. Troy - 10th, 1:50.876 I don’t think I’ve ever ridden on a track that felt like that. The track wasn’t wet, but it felt like it was, or it felt like we all had flat tyres! It was very strange, but the decision to abandon the first free practice session was the right one. I had many, many slides in just the two laps I did and that is not right. It’s also what the other riders all felt, so we all knew that there was a serious problem. When we eventually went out, at 5.45 pm, the track was definitely better, but there were still at least three areas where you had to be ever so careful. I’m hoping that, as the weekend goes on and more rubber is put down, conditions will improve. Today we were able to try out quite a few things and end with some positive ideas about which direction to take. Because we have lost a session, we are at a disadvantage compared to most teams because they have previous experience over the years with their bikes, whereas we are starting new. We really needed as much track time as possible, but the recent improvements to the rideability of the bike are making our lives a bit easier.
