Anyone have the front crank oil seal tools in downstate NY area?

Howdy all.

I'm in downstate NY (right near the Tappan Zee (cough cough MC) Bridge) and I need to replace the oil seal on the crankshaft behind the alternator pulley.

I appears that you need some special tools to correctly install the seal, and I was wondering if anyone has them locally.

I've been calling around to try and order, but it appears that no one stocks them and have to come from Germany (MAX BMW told me 4 weeks).

In a pinch use the old seal to tap the new one in. Make a note of how far in, as too far is no good!

Unfortunately, the old seal got damaged when the alternator belt broke and got wedged behind the pulley. I haven't pulled it out yet, but I don't think it's in any shape to be used.

As an alternative, can anyone recommend an independent mechanic that works on BMWs?

The closest one to me is in Hasbrouck Heights, NJ, but any time I've called them for anything, I get the answering machine.

I'd rather not have to drive an hour or more.

If an old seal in good condition is a viable tool for installation of a new seal, could you buy 2 seals and use one as the tool?

I don't think so. I just checked again, and according to my Clymer manual, the seal's lip has to be formed on one tool and then a second tool is used as a driver to slide the seal off the first tool and onto the crank and then a third tool threads into the crank and pushes the seal into place.

Just to wrap this us, I wound up ordering the tool set from bike-parts-bmw.com, which claims to be an official BMW Motorrad site. The tool set was shipped from Germany and I got it in 4 days.

Got the old seal out using a screw (drilled a hole using a bit with a stop) and installed the new one with the tool.

Here's the set. It's 3 pieces, each with a part #, but the set is what you need.

The total for the tool set came out to around $115 (the breakdown was 70 for the tool and 45 for the shipping). MAX BMW was $90 for the tools, no idea what the shipping would have been, but they quoted me 4 weeks.
