Air Vests By FortNine

My wife and I are very happy with our Klim Ai-1 airbag vests. Good price point, you can service it yourself until after 3 (I think) deployments (certainly hope to never have it deploy - if it deploys twice, I think there would have to be some serious thought to what I’m doing!). Most don’t purchase the “brain” and merely rent it - two plans, one yearly and the other monthly. For me, the monthly makes sense with a 4 month allowable break in the winter. I do subscribe to the adventure algorithm for a very small annual fee (can also be payed by the month). Very comfortable, no tether, and works with all my jackets and my one piece suit.

Dennis, I have a Helite vest and fortunately never had need for it to deploy. I very much doubt that the Helite would give you the protection that you desire if you had a direct landing on your shoulder. In my case the arms and shoulders are exposed with the vest not inflated and I question that when inflated it would extend enough for shoulder protection.

Yes, the Alpine Stars looks like a real way to go. Gonna call and talk with them to see if the upper arm and shoulder/chest areas inflate and give the protection that it looks like. Hindsight is not worth anything but I really wish I had read this article and come across the concept years ago.........Thanks so much for the advice fellas. .............It's really so good to talk and think about with you.......God bless.....Dennis

I had shoulder repair surgery last November and 4 of my friends/neighbors have also in the last year. The recovery/rehab can be a bear depending on the extent of the surgery. Don't know anyone who has had a complete replacement though. I can only imagine it will be tough as well. Hang in there through it. The light at the end of the tunnel will appear eventually and as God always reminds me - this too shall pass.

+1 for the Klim vest. Very comfortable as an added feature to safety.

If you know someone with this vest, ask them for a membership discount code. (I have one to share, too… I get an additional discount if you use it. :) )

(For owners of this vest, there’s a recent firmware update: Arolla v6.0.2)

I just ordered a Helite Turtle 2. Like most Vermonters I have an aversion to heat, and the jackets (or under jacket vests) seem like they’d so restrict airflow that I’d set it aside. An extra layer of gear isn’t really the way I wanted to go, but I just don’t heal like I did as a 20 year old Marine.

Hopefully it will arrive before we leave for the rally in two weeks!

I started out with the HitAir, then bought the Tech 5 because it offered more protection at the shoulder and I didn't have to clip in. After two years I am back to the HitAir. Why? The Tech 5 is heavy, bulky and hot. The HitAir is light and allows lots of ventilation for my Klim jacket. If you drop your bike the Tech 5 will go off, and it will take 3 weeks and $180 to get it reset. The HitAir will also go off, but it will take $30 and 5 minutes to reset. I think the Klim or the electronic Helite might be a good compromise: no clip and resettable by the owner. Living in the mountains of NC I have seen the ground more times than I want to admit, and yes I forget to tether.
