ABS Problems on 1996 R1100RT

My dealer says my ABS pump is in fault mode and needs replaced, and wants $2,300. while pursuing other solutions like Module Master, I am wondering:

1) Can I disable the ABS and ride without it? How? (Dealer says it is unsafe as is...but he is seeing $$)
2) Where is the unit? Can the average backyard mechanic (me) remove it? Can the bike be ridden while its out?

I understand there are insurance and liability issues associated with disconnecting it, especially if you don't tell your insurer. And all things equal I wold prefer to have ABS. But at the moment I cant handle $2,300.

would appreciate your insights. Thank you
M

Your 96 R11RT has the ABS2 system. If the system isn't working, you will have normal hydraulic brakes, just no ABS. This is true as long as the hydraulics don't get blocked by old degraded brake hose bits.

Are you still riding with the original black rubber brake hoses (now 23 years old)??? If you are, you might consider replacing them (immediately) with stainless steel braided lines. Flush the system thoroughly and you might get lucky and old bits of rubber get flushed out and yours works again. Not very likely, but there is a chance it happens.

The ABS module, pump and computer, are located under the gas tank just forward from the battery. I think the Motronic engine computer is sandwiched between the battery and the ABS. Yes the average mechanic can remove it and replace it. When it is out, there will be an opening in the brake lines. Unless you construct a hydraulic line with the right fittings to connect the gaps you can't ride the bike until another ABS module (or the repaired one) is put back.

Perhaps you should call Module Master and see what the turnaround is for an ABS2 repair.

Yes you can absolutely ride without ABS. Having said that, swap out your old brake lines (assuming still installed) for improved aftermarket stainless set and flush with new DOT 4. Highly probable fix depending on level of internal contamination from deteriorated original brake lines.
