ABS problems help please

Leland

Please help a newbie with a rather puzzling problem.

Recently my ABS lights started flashing on my 1997 R1100GS.

I connected a LED to the dianostics lead and it read three dips indicating a fault with the front sensor (this would make sence as I recently overhauled the caliper and changed the front tyre).

I then checked the abs sensor gap which was a little to wide I set it correctly and reset the abs. When I test rode the bike the ABS lights came on again after a mile or so.

I then checked the integrity of the front sensor. It had the correct resisitance of 140 ohms between the pins. And both pins were open to ground.

So anybody any ideas?? Is it the front sensor can it fail and still read correctly??

Thanks

If the lights are flashing alternately then you may have a fault code that can only be cleared by a BMW technician. Until you get that corrected I suggest you remove the ABS relay under the seat to depower the ABS altogether.

Since the lights are flashing the ABS is not working anyway, so there is no loss right now to depower the ABS.

My guess is the ABS was not getting a sufficient signal from the front sensor over too many restarts and has gone into fail/shutdown mode.

You sure?

Does it have to be cleared by a BMW technichan? I thought you could hold pin 2 of the diagnostics plug to ground and that would preform the the same action. Will changing the fronts sensor and preforming the reset sort the problem out??

What is fail shut down mode? Do you think the front sensor is at fault?

Thanks
