98 1100RT clutch noise

If it was me I would replace the bearing before I did any more riding, just to preclude doing damage to other items. With 68K on the clock, do you know if the splines have been greased around 40K and are you still on original clutch assembly?

Gotcha. Bought it with 55k, and not sure if the splines were greased. I’d guess they were, based on who the previous owner was, but not 100% certain. Seems I have to crack the transmission to do that?

Sounds like you know who the previous owner was, maybe worth contact him just to verify. Beats splitting the bike to check. If you received service records, the dealer who performed them may also know.

Yeah - I'll see if I can track that info down. Bought the bike from a guy who bought it from an older couple who had stopped riding a while ago and the bike sat for a few years. He did some reconditioning before reselling, but no trans work. I'm just guessing here, but I imagine, based on his description of them (and I had no reason not to trust him) that they were on top of maintenance.

UPDATE!

In the middle of the job now. Took it apart and replaced bearing and spring. When the old ones came out they were almost fused... I had to pry the spring out... everything else looks good. I am going to clean and grease everything and try to put it back together... I will update again to let you know how it rides and post a couple of photos of the old bearing...

Success! I got the bike all back together with no parts left over! ;)
The bike is running well with no sounds associated with the clutch. Also all the splines in final drive and drive train were in good shape and had grease on them, so I am confident that the input splines can wait til 80k... Thanks for all the help here!

Since the trans input spline lube is NOT a factory recommended procedure (yet is vitally necessary), it is very possible that it was not done previously. I'd wait until winter if possible, but pay attention to shifting behavior of the bike. If downshifts become "recalcitrant", especially 4 to 3 and 3 to 2, that is your warning sign. Do not ignore! Once those downshifts start becoming difficult (usually just requires releasing clutch then attempting the shift again to make them happen), you only have in the vicinity of 2,000 miles (maximum) before it all goes to hell. And when those splines go... they're gone, and you're walking or sitting, but you sure ain't riding anywhere.

96 R1100RT raspy clutch noise and "clacking" noise on low rpms

Hell to all. Am new to MOA. I bought a used 96 R1100RT with 55,000 on the odo. Had metallic clanking noise on right side...sounded like tranny coming apart. I felt pretty screwed. Turns out it was the buttwerfly in the right throttle body. I adjusted the play in the throttle cable ant it mostly went away. As motor goes to 2000 RPM +, noise goes away. At idle when warmed up, is quiet and smooth. Will investigate syncro of throttle bodies soon.

When I have the clutch out in neurtal, (clutch cable NOT under pulling pressure) there is a rasping noise, rather loud. When the clutch lever is pulled in, noise goes away. Bike runs great, tranny smooth shifting. Any ideas?

Walt Craig, Glenville, PA. New mwmber. 72 yrs old, Ret. USA colonel. 96 R1100RT 56,490 miles) and 84 R100RT, 51,250 miles). Both run great, pleasure to ride. Phone is 717 229 2840

Best regards to all.

Hi,

Welcome. This is a great forum; there are a few awesome gurus here. I'm looking at you, GSAddict!

This is the opposite to what was happening with mine. I changed the throwout bearing and my issue was resolved...
From what I understand about the dry clutch on these bikes is that they can be a bit noisy and rattle a bit when in neutral with clutch lever released.

In other news, I forgot to post the video of my bike during clutch bearing repair... Here it is:
