93 K75S Electrical Question

I recently posted a question about an intermitent staring issue with my K75S. In trying to troubleshoot the problem, I noticed that my bike seemed to turn over a little slow on start. I checked my log and found that my battery was 5 years old and the PO had let the bike sit for a long period. I decided to buy a new battery. I went with a Scorpion AGM battery because we have had good luck with those in the old british bikes. I ordered the one listed for the K75S and when it arrived, it was much smaller. It was an 18 amp hour type and about half the size of the one that I took out. I decided to give it a try and the results were interesting. It was an early morning ride before sun rise. For the first five minutes everything was fine. Then, I noticed that everytime I backed off the gas, the lights would flicker. The problem got progressively worse until the lights went out as I was pulling into work. I had been using the high beam for most of the ride and my bike has a 100/55 headlight bulb, but no other accessories. I called Scorpion and spoke with a tech rep. He said that my problem sounded like I had a battery that was too small for the bike. He also said that the K75RT calls for the larger battery like the one that I took out of my bike, but BMW shows the same battery in the K75C as the K75S. He is sending me a new battery in the larger size. My question is simple, is it reasonable that my problem was the battery, 18 amp hour vs 30 amp hour, or should I look for other problems? The strange thing is that the K1100S calls for the smaller battery. Sorry about the long post and thaks for the input.

I would look for other problems. Start with which alternator is in the bike. If it has two poles with ring connectors on the upper left side, and a sticker that has a prominent 50 on it it is a 50 amp, 700 watt alternator. If it has a plug that goes into the back of the alternator it is a 450 watt unit.

Either - in good condition should carry house loads and even the 100w bulb, but the little one would be marginal. The big one should happily carry that load with a tiny battery in place.

My hunch is you have dirty slip rings or worn brushes in the alternator but that is a guess based on experience, and your symptoms.

Thanks, I will check my alternator to see what I have.
