'88 R100RS noises emitting from driveshaft and/or finaldrive

I recently went out for a jaunt on this later model RS(70K) on the way back I detected some subtle noise(a whirling noise)from the rear drive chain I believed, Then rolling into the garage with the bike then shut down, maneuvering into its parking space I was hearing the sounds of the driveshaft loudly rotating, I hadn't noticed that before? Checking fluid in the FD there admittedly very very little and the drive shaft oil 100cc(50cc low). I strive to maintain my 3 BMWs routinely and responsibly, matter of fact I had just lubed the clutch splines about 3 weeks earlier but obviously I had been remiss to check the fluid levels in these areas when I purchased the bike 3 yrs earlier, I have not noted any leakage. Apparently that aspect of maintenance just dropped off my radar screen riding through a busy life and rotating my attention between the 3 bikes a 64 yro tractor, 3 rental units(hear the violins?). Well enough self deprecation, it is what it is now. Aside from the clatter appearing to source from the driveshaft U-Joints. pulled back the rubber boot at the tranny to see if any bolts had backed out but found none loose, I also am noting that with the rear wheel off the floor and held in gear that there is a lot of freeplay when I rotate the wheel in the direction of travel before it engages the FD gears. Obviously a teardown is needed, what do you people believe that I will find once in FD and shaft?

88 RS rear noise

I rather doubt your problem is the rear drive chain. More likely the Final Drive needs checking. Check it now before riding again. See Snowbum"s site for more than you will ever want to know about those monoshock Final Drives. It will NOT get better and fix itself.
