2016 R1200RT - Is this brake pad heat shield backwards?

I'm working on a friend's 2016 R1200RT. In the process, I noticed that the rear brake pads incorporate a heat shield on one side. I've seen this before on a variety of motorcycles, but I had assumed the function was to insulate the caliper pistons and brake fluid from the heat generated by the brake pads. On this bike, the pad with shield is on the right side side of the caliper, which is opposite of the pistons. The pads only go in one way...

I'm wondering if this bike has the wrong pads installed, any insight from other BMW owners would be appreciated.

The specified pads look like that in the fiche. And FWIW, none of the other dozen or so pads that I have in stock have a shield like that on them at all. I always thought it was against vibration (squealing) but I also would have thought that going against the pistons would be correct. Looks like that's not the case.

Thanks for the information, I appreciate it. I did pull up a parts diagram, and did not see the shield in that case. Pads that I have used on my 2008 RT1200 did not have the shield.

Since the pads had wear remaining, I left it as-is, but the arrangement was the opposite of what I have seen on my KTM dirt bikes, and seemed to defy logic.

My 2012 RT has the heat shields front + rear. Dealer installed, and the heat shields are against the pistons. The rear only has pistons on one side. Which why in the pick you see the shield on the inboard side (no piston)
