I'm working on a friend's 2016 R1200RT. In the process, I noticed that the rear brake pads incorporate a heat shield on one side. I've seen this before on a variety of motorcycles, but I had assumed the function was to insulate the caliper pistons and brake fluid from the heat generated by the brake pads. On this bike, the pad with shield is on the right side side of the caliper, which is opposite of the pistons. The pads only go in one way...
