2013 F700GS - rear brake pedal has long engagement

My rear brake pedal has to be pushed far before the brake engages, so much that I don't think I can lock up the rear wheel. I have already tried the "tie a weight to the pedal and leave it overnight" on the advice of my salesman. Before I submit for service, is there any adjustments I can do on my own to shorten the travel?
