2007 R1200RT installing DENALI CANsmart Controller GEN II

Howdy all.

I bought a GEN II CANsmart controller because one of the things it's supposed to do is automatically flash the brake lights on decel, something I put on my V-Strom, and I find useful.

Unfortunately, the instructions on how to connect that aren't very helpful and so far Denali hasn't been either.

Has anyone connect one of these on (ideally a 2007) a 2005-2013 and hooked up the brake light to it?

Thanks!

I have a 2010 RT with Hex EZcan (basically the Denali are rebranded Hex), I actually have 2 Hex's connected in parallel to have more than 4 circuits. I have a set of Skene brake light connected to the Hex on 1 circuit and I programmed the lights to have a certain lighting pattern and the deceleration feature within the Hex software. These light are just connected to positive and negative on that circuit just like any other light, you just need to configure them to wokr as brake lights and what type of flash and other options you want.

I was under the impression that this would work with the existing brake light. If that's not the case, then I'll return it and go with the Skene P3 Lights with Decel.

I don't know how that would be possible, the idea of the Hex EZCan and Denali are to avoid wiring into any of the factory wiring, it listens to the CANBUS and activates lights and accessories based on how you program them. IMO, using the EzCan or Cansmart with the Skene lights would be a better solution as you can expand use of the Denali later and the Skene has just a controller for their lights and not the expandability of the Denali. Plus you will have to tap into the wiring harness for the Skene and with Denali you just tie into power at battery and plug the Denali in-line with CANBUS. I purchased the Skene lights with controller and ended up using the EzCan. Easier to use and program and can be used with other lights etc.

I just re-read the web page and I missed it, but you are correct, this only works with aftermarket lights. I'll need to decide if I want to keep the gen2, or save the $150 over the gen1. It's not clear to me that the gen2 is that much better than the gen1

I'm not sure about the Denali, but I know I decided to update from Gen1 to Gen2 with EZcan as there were benefits I saw, but that was several years ago and I'd have to look up or recall what the upgrades were. I think it had more output power and more configuration options that were a benefit to me.
