2005 RT Final drive type

Hello Group,

I'm getting some odd gritty noises coming out of my final drive. I have a 2005 RT. I'd like to just buy a used unit and swap it out rather than change out the bearings. Problem is it looks like the 2005 could have a gen 1 unit with the smaller abs sensor. How would I know?

I took this number from my final drive: K2/2 7665061

Would someone know if I need a gen 1 or gen 2? If so can I use another year or a GS model? I wouldn't mind lowering the ratio a bit. First gear is sooo taaaalllllll. thx

Thanks in advance!

Browse to https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/select?product=M&archive=0 and make sure “motorcycle” and “current” are selected. Enter the last 7 digits of your VIN number in the vin search box, and it will respond with exact model and month/year of production for your bike. Browse to the final drive section and select it, then click on the part number for the FD unit to see which models used that unit. That should be useful knowledge if you’re shopping for a used drive. If you find a used unit try to get the VIN it came from; you can look that up on RealOEM and verify the match.

Best,
DeVern

Thank you. I followed the instructions that you gave and it says manufactured 2/2005. I clicked through on the diagrams and it showed both gen 1 and gen 2. But when I put right angle drive in the search bar it came up showing only gen. 1. like this:

K26 (R 900 RT, R 1200 RT) R 1200 RT 05 (0368,0388) Right-angle gearbox Integral ABS Gen. 1

So i'm guessing that's it. thank you!

Follow up. I installed the GS final drive in my 2005 RT. It works great. Taking off in 1st gear is very easy now. This will be a big improvement in stop and go traffic! It will rev higher in 6th gear on the hiway, this is the downside. I made a video documenting my experience here:
