2004 Rockster R1150r iABS Clutch Bleed Screw Kaput

Greetings, this is my first post after buying an 04 rockster two weeks ago.

Yesterday I did a full iABS brake bleed. What a wonderful experience. So far so good on that front.

On the bad news side, I managed to destroy the set screw in the clutch bleed line - aka the "clutch ventilation screw" in the following link:

I have two questions before I get back to the important work of wrecking my bike one part at a time.

First, is there a secret to separating the clutch ventilation screw fitting (the round barrell fitting that contains the set screw) from the fitting on the end of the bleed line? Both have flats suggesting they can be unscrewed. When I try to separate (unscrew) them I get a nasty dont-do-that feeling as the parts move against great resistance. Perhaps these are reverse thread? Or machine-pressed?

Second, a replacement part is $50 plus plus. I'd rather buy a generic metric brake fitting and put a speed bleeder on it. Is there a secret reason why that's a bad idea? Internet research indicates that BMW frowns on leaving a speed bleeder in the bleed line and I'm not sure why this would be worse than a speed bleeder in a brake caliper.

Bonus points for anyone who can tell me what the size of the fitting would be if I go with the generic option.

Double bonus points if you know what size speed bleeders go in the brake calipers for this bike. I"m having a surprisingly hard time finding an answer to that question on the interwebs.

There is loctite used in that assembly which must be heated to loosen. TOO much heat melts the plastic line and the fitting will fall off! Good Luck! I found out the hard way. Its a regular left to loosen thread.
 
Take off the complete vent assembly and the hose end is tapered to accept a standard M10-1.00 short bleed screw or speed bleeder. It is a much cheaper and easier solution for future service. As a bonus, you won't need heat, because there is no loctite at the tapered joint. The crimed fitting on the hose and the hex adjacent to it do not rotate relative to the hose without damaging it so be careful. If your wrench seems like it will slip on the hex before to can get the threads / taper to break free a vise grip locking wrench might help you get a grip.

As for why to avoid leaving a speed bleeder in place, the factory vent fitting has a spring loaded check ball in it and it seals when the bleed screw is removed instead of when the it is tightened. That is why the factory bleed screw has a blunt tip, to depress the ball. Once you get rid of the vent fitting, there is no reason not to leave a bleed screw or speed bleeder in place. In fact, you have no other reasonable choice.

Thanks. Just what I needed. The parts came apart with a bit of heat. I installed an M10 x 1.0 speed bleeder directly into the hose fitting. All good.
 
One more thing - If your fluid bleeds out all dark and nasty, consider putting in a bit of extra work to inspect your slave cylinder for a leak and re-lube the throwout bearing while you are in there.
