2003 F650GS Dakar Sitting for Two Years

I have not ridden my Dakar for the past two years. It has been stored in my unheated pole barn. I have some time now and would like to start riding it again. I'm no mechanic, but what steps should I take to make sure I don't damage the engine when trying to fire it up? I'm thinking I'll probably have some fuel issues? I have a new lithium battery. I appreciate any advice!

I guess I would check the gas tank and see what was left for gas. If there was gas leftover, see how it smells…..probably pretty bad.
If it has evaporated and left a brownish residue, I would probably take the tank off and swish some carb cleaner around in it and get it as clean as possible.
If it just smells bad, just drain it, have a look in the tank for anything odd, refill with non-ethanol gas and a good dose of Techron.
It will probably start pretty quickly which will bring the oil up quickly as well. If you want, you could remove the spark plug and drop a little light oil in the cylinder area.
I would check the airbox/air cleaner area for mice/mouse nest before trying a start.
A general look-over will be in order especially for any critter damage taking notice of the wires and telltale mouse droppings.
Good luck.
