1999 R1100RT Tachometer not working

I have been having issues with the tachometer on my R1100Rt….initially it seemed as if it was reading less than actual RPM but was always giving a reading with no wiggle of the needle…..just perhaps 1,000 RPM low at a real RPM of 4000. This was consistent for 3 months in the spring when I used this bike over a 2,000 mile period. I just got back to where I have stored the bike since April and started it up today. Bike was on a battery tender, battery was new in February. Bike fired right up, starter working great. Now the tachometer does not read at all…..no bouncing…..nothing. Bike runs smooth, no missing or hesitation. I do not have my manuals with me so need advice as to possible cause. I am familiar with HES being a problem on these bikes and I think it is original on this bike…19,000 miles. But it has never failed to start, never cut out or misfired, and. O tach needle bouncing. Any advice as to how to troubleshoot this is appreciated.
