1977 BMW R100RS Restore Project

Brook - I am looking forward to seeing you and the bike at the soon-to-occur 40th anniversary gathering for the RS.

Please be careful riding across the country.

As I understand it, the organizer of this event still has openings. This will be a once-in-a-lifetime celebration of
the BMW RS bike. Other airheads may wish to attend. I have cut and pasted info on registration for this event
below (Sept 14-17 in Harleysville, Pa).

[snip]

HI Rob,

Thank you and yes, I'm signed up and getting the bike setup for touring. I just got the GPS, and panniers mounted.

Best.
Brook.

That's gorgeous, Brook. Thanks for sharing it!

Hi Dave,

Thank you for the kind words. It's been christened - rain storm and bug guts - so that pristine "garage queen" look has been replaced with a more honest patina :)

Of course, I wipe as much off as I can, kinda like you do with a new car, but I built it to ride not to hide.

Best.
Brook.

Great attention to details, great plastic work, paint is perfect, mechanical spot on and shop as always imaculate, compared to mine. Now tell how it rides.

Thank you. I'm getting used to it-1000cc motor, short bars, tight fairing-so we are adjusting to each other and getting more in synch every ride we take. I've got a bit over 800 miles on it so far.

Best.
Brook.

Beautiful, just beautiful. Be proud of that bike.

Thank you. When you build something, you see the small defects of your workmanship. It can dull your appreciation of the final product for awhile, but eventually the fun of riding what you built overcomes all that. I'm pretty close to that point now :)

Best.
Brook.

Nice

Bike looks great if you can restore the roadcrafter yellow to former glory or get most of stains out we would really be impressed plus what ever product you used many of us would buy.

Alas, I have no secrets to restore my "stitch" to its original "Big Bird" yellow glory. :)

You don't get much leverage from an RS bar. I used to notice it, trying to hold a constant arc on cloverleaf off ramps. When I transitioned to an R1150RS, it was much easier.

Also, running twisties fast, I was always a bit on edge with my '82.

Rinty,

That's a good summary of my sense as well. Like any bike, you have to figure out what inputs get the best results. I've found a hard, sharp shove on the bars with more body lean than the 1150RS gets it turning much quicker. We are still getting to know each better. :)

Best.
Brook.

The RS looks gorgeous Brook. Looking forward to checking her out at the RS rally in PA. I'm pre-packing my '82 today here in Vancouver B.C. for a Tuesday take off. Taking the northern route across Canada. The bike is ready to go finally with a 60 mile test ride completed a couple days ago to scrub new tires and make sure nothing fell off. :) See you in PA!

You have a "bit longer" ride than I so best wishes on the trip. I'm still sorting a few things out but am planning on leaving on the 10th with a 5 day ride to PA from Denver planned. The rally should be a unique event.

WOW! You did an absolutely amazing job. It looks absolutely stunning. Want to trade? LOL! :)

I completed assembling the bike from the frame through the gas cap and put together a write-up that shows the order in which I assembled it. You will find the write-up here:
<ul class="children">
<li class="page_item page-item-5349 current_page_item"><a href="http://brook.reams.me/bmw-motorcyle-rebuilds/1977-bmw-r100rs-rebuild-project-index/00-bmw-1977-r100rs-assembling-the-bike-from-the-frame-up/">00 BMW 1977 R100RS Assembling The Bike From the Frame Up</a></li>
</ul>
It includes assembly of the front forks, seat, fenders, battery box, installation of the handlebars and cables, and odds and ends that I felt were better covered in this write-up rather in a separate one following the parts fiche breakdown I use for cataloging my write-ups. I include links to other write-ups where applicable to explain a particular procedure.

Here is a short video of a walk-around of the finished bike followed by some pictures.

Thanks.

I have the panniers and GPS mounted and just a couple more "nips and tucks" to complete before a two week 3700 mile ride to the 40th anniversary rally. Wish me luck :)

3700 miles? That's not a ride..that's a journey and an epic journey at that. Good luck, but I doubt that you'll need it. Hope you have an enjoyable and safe trip, be sure to take lots of photos along the way.

Did you make it out to the 40th Anniversary Celebration, Brook?

Yes I did and I just returned about noon today. Here are my blogs on the adventures I had along the way and the coolness of the rally.

What an incredible trip report, Brook! When I saw the list of tools and parts you packed, I thought it might be the makings of a Matt Parkhouse ride. :D

Looking back, the most memorable trips are the ones where "something happened".

Rinty,

I ended up needing none of the parts I took. Maybe by packing them I ensured they wouldn't be needed? Based on that logic, I should have packed a spare circlip too? :)

Best.
Brook.
