1971 R75/5 final drive gear oil fill

Hi gang, so I change the final drive gear oil. 200ml came out. Put 200ml back in 80W-90 wasn't up to threads. topped it to threads probably like 230ml. its right up to threads when I turn rear wheel. is this ok? the swing arm boot is leaking. I dumped that and very little drained out. little upset about that because I've put about 200 miles on bike. put about 100-120 ml in there. I hope I didn't over fill final drive. With my Kawasaki c14 they say don't move rear wheel at all when filling final drive. Jim

You're probably OK on the final drive. I don't measure what comes out or what I put in...just put in enough to come to the bottom of the threads in the fill hole. I don't think there's anything wrong with rotating the rear wheel...might be able to dislodge an air pocket.

100cc is about right for the drive shaft. The oil sloshes back and forth as you brake and accelerate, so the oil will make it up to the boot. I'd track down where the oil is coming from...likely the bands at the front and back are not tight enough. Or if the boot is old enough, it might have cracks in the creases.

I always fill to the bottom thread. Then I turn the rear wheel and see the gear oil level go down. Then I watch it rise back to the bottom thread again.

Das Boot

Not the boat but lol the boot. I won't add to what Kurt and Paul say about filing the final drive. If you have NOT had the swing arm boot out or loose, It is most likely cracked and leaking and will need replaced. If you HAVE had the boot out. oh boy

The boot however is one of my producers of blue language whenever I have to mess with one.

The boot is oriented with a top and front, LOL, I have a teflon memory and can't remember the German words for Top and Front. If you have recently had the boot out, check to see it is installed correctly.

The front clamp is fairly easy to install, the back on on the swing arm is the pain. There may be a clip on the bottom of the swing arm the boot has to fit on as well as the clamp properly or the thing will leak. Again, I am not much help because I can't remember the exact procedure sitting at my computer. Seems there was a thread in another post on how to install, Kurt is the guy to find that, he is good about that stuff.

Clean things up, fill the driveshaft with 100cc of gear oil, and keep an eye out for leaks. If you don't have any, give thanks, if you do, good luck. St.
