'18 RT Instrument Panel Background Changing from MPH to RT Logo Mystery

I ride with the instrument panel "background", the space in the center above the odometer, showing the speed in MPH. Using the wonder wheel, you can change it to "RT Logo", or "blank" by going into "settings", but I like to see my speed displayed in numbers.

Last year I replaced the battery, then noticed the background had changed to "RT Logo" when the bike started. Didn't think much about it, thought it was related to either low battery or disconnecting the battery to change it.

Last week I did an oil change in preparation for a trip to LA (today). When I went to reset the interval using GS-911, it said the bike's battery was low and needed to charge. It had been sitting awhile, so that was understandable, so I charged it.

Started it up for a ride to get gas and noticed the RT Logo had returned. Huh. I put it back to MPH again and thought nothing of it...until today.

This morning, I took off on my LA trip and stopped for lunch after 150 miles. Started the bike after lunch and the RT Logo had reappeared. OK, this is weird. Not trusting the bike, I turned around and rode home.

Tested at home...Battery showing 13V before starting bike, then coming up to 14V with bike running.

Any clue on why the "Background" switches from one form to another?

In my experience, if there is a dash reset upon the first start of the day, the battery needs replacement. You mentioned it was an ‘18, original battery?

Replaced a year ago. Chrome brand, AGM from Amazon, as recommended in another thread on this site. Not unheard of that it would fail that soon, but certainly disappointing.

Appreciate the info on dash reset.

Same here

Same bike, 2017 R1200RT, same recent chrome battery, fully charged. Same symptom of dash defaulting back to RT logo. I reset it back to MPH an off I go. I happens about twice in 10 starts.

What does the voltage drop to when the starter button is pressed? Other than make and model, the Chrome battery seems the commonality between these two reports.

Best,

The other day I was riding along and felt a quick engine change and looks at the dash, pretty basic on the F800GS, and it was blank. It began to get itself rebooted but was not on the trip meter display where I leave it.

The cause- another low beam bulb- H7. It seems like I need a new bulb every year. This is the first time I have had the bike react and have to reboot itself during a bulb failure. These, even 10 year old bikes, are becoming more and more susceptible to a voltage change.

At least it didn't shut itself off.

Don't feel too bad. I just had to replace my OEM BMW battery that was a little over a year old with an AGM Yuasa. I was somewhat surprised to see that the OEM BMW battery was made in China and the Yuasa was made in the USA - something that made me feel better about the experience.

High 11s.
I ran a GS-911 scan this morning, all good.
Will order a YUASA battery, this one has lost my trust.

Edit: New battery installed, issue solved. I'd like to meet the person that designed the end cover that holds the battery in, just to find out who or what he/she was pissed at.
