05 R1200RT -Using Factory TDC Tool To Set Valve Clearance

Has anyone had experience in using the factory tool to locate TDC

An Australian vendor sells an after-market version with a consistent diameter of 8.5mm, with no notched end for locating purposes

But my Haynes manual shows a tool with a reduction of the tip down to 5 mm diameter, with a 5mm length

This Haynes version appears to be very similar to the TDC tool for Oil head motors

Any comments ?

Such a tool is not needed to check/set valves.

I believe this bike falls in the Hexhead/Camhead area. There are a couple of DIY threads in the following area that mention valve clearance checks:

Maybe see if those DIY posts discuss the tool and/or any need for it.

Sorry for my brief answer. A four year old took priority. The link Kurt provided has an excellent pictorial on setting the Hexhead valves, as well as several other maintenance procedures. My Haynes Manual for the Hexhead shows using marks on the cam chain sprocket to find TDC.

Have used the marks on cam sprockets on both Oilhead and Hexheads, the marks are harder to see on Hexheads, but they are there.
