I had to take the exhaust off to reseal the engine (oil leak at pushrod seals). All the individual exhaust components came apart ok, and I decided to replace the headers and keep the rest after a good cleaning.

The problem I'm running into is that the original system used soft gaskets (sleeves) for all the connections to the front muffler. However, the gasket BMW sells today for the rear muffler to front muffler transition (item 9 in the sketch, part number 18 21 2 331 955) is an aluminum split sleeve, not the old soft gasket that came out in tatters when I took the mufflers off. This sleeve is too thick and too large in diameter to fit correctly, so I ended up removing about 0.20 mm from the wall thickness (on the lathe) and using sandpaper at the split until it fit properly. Fitting properly to me means that, with the clamp on but loose, I can assemble the parts by hand and they fit tight but not so tight that the use of a mallet is required.
Has anyone had a problem like this before? I tried researching it on the internet but didn't find anything useful.
