2016 R1200RT site glass oil check

In 412,000 miles Voni has never put her R1100RS on the center stand. It leans to the left on the sidestand and the sight glass is on the left side. So on the side stand the oil level appears above the top of the sight glass. As long as it showed above the top she was always good to go with no need to put it on the center stand. She could check it though sitting on it upright by reaching down with a small mirror to view the sight glass. She invented that system herself.

Just wanted to follow up with you on using the mirror trick [ works like a charm ] and yours and others thoughts on the following

Twice, bike out for a 20 minute ride and back, fully warmed up.

Before I left on both, the sight glass was checked with the mirror. Showed 25% full in the sight glass. After the ride, the bike sat on the side stand for 10 minutes, then using the mirror bike upright. Showed the same level.

Added 8 ounces. Checked it 24 hours later after sitting on the side stand, then upright with the mirror. 60% full in sight glass. After a 30 minute ride, side stand for 10 minutes, then checking with mirror, 60% full.

Observation, cold check and after ride check using the above procedure, same reading at 25% and 60% after 8 ounces topped up. Is it safe to assume that just a cold check in the morning would give enough of a reliable reading?

Thanks

Yes as far as I'm concerned. I never did understand why BMW thinks a hot check is needed.

FWIW, I added a "lift handle" for putting my wethead GS on its center stand. Makes all the difference - now it's easy and less risky to me and the bike to put the bike on the center stand.

There is a 1/2" dia. stainless steel bar on each side of the passenger seat. Why not use that? Stand on the center stand arm and pull up on the passenger grab bar.

If you need an owner's manual they are free to download from here. Yours is surely the 0A13 version.

It appears that the link to the free manuals has changed since the above was written; I found the manual for my 2016 R1200RT here:

As many of you know, you can get the production date of your bike at the MAX BMW Parts site and enter the last seven digits of your VIN.
