Independent BMW shops

Ok, I got tired of trying to locate a decent Gpx file so I made one.

I cleaned up the POI factory file which had a lot of errors and added shops from the "Internet BMW Riders - Independent shops and mechanics list"
The file contains 139 shops that I have verified the coordinates and if they are still open.
Some are other brands dealers that used to be BMW dealers but still offer the service.
I've indicated the shops that are on private properties and I've put a "?" on those that were on one of the lists but I couldn't confirm that they offered service for BMW bikes.

If anyone has any other shops they would like to add, please post the name and address and I will add them to the file.

I've started comparing it with mine.
So far , the locations on mine are more accurate. (Some of them on this list are pretty off)
I know that some of them that are not on my list have been deleted because the shops are closed.
I will check the others to see if they are shops that I don't have.
I will have to check them and report back.
I should have kept a list of the obsolete shops that keep appearing on those lists so I would not have to check them again.

I've added it to the file and will upload an updated version soon

As far as opening the file, I don't understand what's wrong. I downloaded it from the link above and had no issue importing it in Basecamp or uploading it on my Garmin Zumo with POI loader. :scratch

Might mention the best program/utility to open it with. I took a look and don't have one- There is no application set to open the document “BMW Independant shops.gpx”.......running mac.
Just a thought.

From some of the remarks here, I don't think everyone knows what a .gpx file is. One definition:"GPX, or GPS Exchange Format, is an XML schema designed as a common GPS data format for software applications. It can be used to describe waypoints, tracks, and routes. The format is open and can be used without the need to pay license fees."

The key there is that the format is for designed to be read by software, not people. The GPX file can be "opened" with any text editor, but it is not easily read by humans.

Some of the basic formatting is explained in this Wikipedia article.

To be useful to non-programmer types, you need a program that translates the formatted data onto a map. Most route planning programs can do this, like Mapsource, Basecamp, Tyre, Locus, etc.

http://www.gpsvisualizer.com is a site will let you upload a .gpx file to see the locations using any web browser, either on a map, or as a picture or as a slightly more readable text file.

Some data in the file may not be visible in all programs.

To me the real value of Daniel's effort is that the file can be used on a GPS as a POI (Point-Of-Interest) file. So if I need a mechanic while on the road, I can find the nearest one as easily as I can look up a gas station or restaurant.

Sorry to see that you're having trouble opening the file.
.gpx is a standard gps file format. Also known as GPS Xchange format.
It can be read by any GPS and is used to transfer data between them.
I think you can use something called "GPX viewer" on the Mac to view it. I've also read that it can be imported in google maps but I've never tried it.
POI loader is also available for Mac ( It's the Garmin software used to load gpx files to their GPSs. I don't know what the other brands use.)

Like Larry mentioned gpsvisualizer is pretty cool.
I use it to convert tracks from my rides on a google map type map and keep it for reference or send maps to my riding buddy to show him the route we will take on our next ride.

Actually I realize that I have no program to open it. I try to bring out "best" methods that will help the Members here on the forum. In these two posts, along with the file itself, you all provided a great tutorial :clap
