Starting problem

I have an 87k75c with 98k. Recently when I start the bike it runs rough for several minutes. If I try to put any load on the bike other than idle, such as putting it into first and trying to drive, it stalls out the engine. After about 2 min. or so I hear a small humming noise come from the tank, I assume it is the fuel pump. When I hear this noise the bike runs great.
I figure this means my fuel pump is about to give up?
I searched this forum for 'fuel' and read several of the other post. Some seemed like good leads, such as checking around the pump for the gummy seal. I checked, it appears in good shape. I checked for air leaks caused by bad hoses. DidnÔÇÖt find anything alarming, most pieces were changed out at 75K about 2 years ago.
I live in Houston and haven't been riding much over the summer. Too dang hot/humid for me. I ride almost daily though when the daily high drops below 90 sometime in Sept. So, the bike sat most of the summer except a few short weekend trips to local destinations. Is it possible all the sitting this summer caused something to gunk up my fuel system?
Any advice would be great. Thanks.

maybe it's not fuel related...hmm

Ok, I drained the tank, put in 93 octane plus I added some Techron. I let the bike run for a while and it showed the same symptoms. Only this time I noticed something I hadn't before. Whenever the humming sound comes from the tank and the bike starts to run smooth again, the gear indicator on the instrument cluster comes on. When the bike is running rough while warming up the indicator simply isn't there, not even a zero, just blank. Perhaps this problem is electric? I can't seem to find my shop manual, but I think I may pull the tank and check the relay box for any signs of trouble. Any advice would be greatly appreciated...but you are all almost certainly out riding this weekend.
