High RPM Cutout '94 K1100RS

Hey All -

After replacing plugs and resynching throttle bodies, the bike's developed a high RPM cutout (5k+) that is, to say the least, extremely disturbing. Happened under both hard and gradual acceleration, just always above 5k.

It does a quick cut, recover, cut, recover until you let off the gas. Runs great in lower RPMs and seems to be more prominent in the lower gears, but it's done it in all. The cutout feels just like the rev limiter @ the top of the range, but happening much sooner. (also feels like when you are running on a pint of gas and goose it hard).

This a.m. i filled with up, took 2.2 gallons. Rode it like I stole it for about 30 miles. No Problems.

This afternoon, took it out again in the afternoon heat. After I rode it a couple miles, parked it, then rode it again it started doing the cutout again.

Scenario like this: Riding 70 mph down the freeway, bike is completely warmed up, downshift to 3rd, run about 5-6k rpms slowly increasing (not cracking open) as soon as it starts doing so, it starts cutting, hard.

Another - after I get off the freeway, ride it in 1st, again slowly increasing RPMs - once up to about 6.5k or just before 7k, starts cutting out - way b4 the rev limiter.

Definitely it's not more than a gallon or gallon point five down from the top of the tank. Fuel filter was done 4k miles ago (bike has 18k miles), could do it again I suppose. Any other ideas?

Thanks.

Welcome to the forum!:wave

If you keep giving us feedback about the problem we'll keep shooting you ideas.

Start with the easy stuff first. Pull the filter again. Drain it, and let it dry out for an hour. Then LIGHTLY blow through it in the direction of the arrow. If there is ANY resistance, it is starting to get plugged. If there is significant resistance, it's junk and that's your problem.

It also could be a hall effect sensor starting to go bad or a bad coil.

By the way, it REALLY helps us all if you would put the year and model of the bike IN THE TITLE of any thread you start (I added it for you this time).:thumb

That is exactly what my 87 krs did recently while on a trip out west. I was running a little over 80mph and all of a sudden it was as though I turned the ignition off, then she came back on for about a mile and that was it, dead as Nixon!! 20 miles from nowhere in the middle of South Dakota on hwy 90. Checked all my grounds and ecu connections still nothing. Called the Sturgis BMW dealer and spoke with service manager, and he said......"sounds like a HES that's bad news" and I said...I've got one of those with me!! :dance He couldn't believe it, anyway that's another story. Three hours later after taking the tank lower fairing and the radiator cover off I was back in business. The only person who stopped was a state trooper Justin Schneider, what a great fella. He actually stopped by twice to make sure I was doin ok and supply some water after I ran out. Long story, but hope it gives ya some idea what it might be.
Good Luck,
Rod

Eilenberger's Law of Troubleshooting: "Look where you last worked.."

A high speed cutout screams plugs/ignition to me. I'd remove the plugs and make certain one isn't damaged somehow, or gapped wrong, and make sure all the plug wires are fully seated on the plugs. I learned that lesson the expensive way about 40 years ago on an old Volvo 122S..

Cheers! Thanks Folks ... I'm going to try the plug avenue (since I just did them and recheck the wires/gaps) Will let you know!

Update --

Changed the plugs back to the old ones. Two blocks from my house the brick died, but the fuel pump didn't kick back in until I kicked the kickstand down and back up again. Could that be the source of my woes? the kickstand sensor? Or is this a red herring??

You can bridge across the sidestand switch connector with a thin piece of telco wire......that would be a quick way to check if its part of the problem or not.

I'll bet that's it! All the symptoms fit. Do the test that Jon suggests.

I keep forgetting that K11's have that switch. I only work on K75s. They don't have that switch.

Well, initial reports are that bypassing the side stand switch has solved the issue. Just did 50 miles varying between gentle, but high revving and hard cracking to WOT; so far so good. Thanks to all who gave input on this.

Now on to that pesky vibration that sets in about 3.5/4k rpms.......
