Gertie's engine went in smoothly

Add tranny, drive, subframe, and forks

Assembly continues.. slipped in the tranny and connected the drive unit.
All was smooth.. the boot and drive/tranny connections was a little cranky but it came together.. blue locktite on the new connectors.. only two nicks in the paint.:dunno
Frozed the head stock bearing and slammed them in with a block of wood,, packed the bearings up with new grease and bolted it together.. slick.
I had rebuilt the front forks last month and put in new progressive springs. Smooth action. I just put it together and have not torqued it down, I want to get the wheels on and bump it and let things settle in their natural places before I bring it to Torque spec.
I still have some small paint project and the rear fender needs paint before I put it on.
Rolling, more tomarrow.

Great!!

Looks great. Keep the pictures coming. It will encourage me to frame up my 1975 with a Krauser fairing that I found in Germany. The paint thing scares me more than anything after getting quotes for a top of the line paint job.:scratch

When I am done...by July... I will have my Krauser VK 1 installed..
very cool looking. F-1 Windshields produced a new acrylic shield.
I have yet to paint... will be Snow White. For the girl. "Gertie'.

The wiring loom is in, headlite bucket on, a little more progress, and will post a pic.

Assembly continues over and over again.

Gosh, sometimes I put something together and just do it over, and over, and over again... till I get it just right.. to me the mechanicals have to be "just right"

So the assembly goes on... seems like a snails pace.. but the wheels went on and new brakes, ss lines are installed and bled and adjusted. Upper brace torqued... handle bar installed, wiring in place..

That took the most time cleaning and routing just right. Installed the battery box then the rear fender and light assemblies, springs on the side and center stand.
Routed cables and just studied the thing... what an "thing of beauty".

I have discovered over and over that ever thing has it's place and is there for a reason. No extra's all just pure function..great engineering.
I think that every change that was made was deliberate and with forethough and engineering coordination. (for the most part)

Still to go are the foot pegs, exhaust, carbs, controls and grips.

I have ordered mikuni's from Rocky Point... am waiting for Stan to return to the shop. May just have to put on the bings and call it good till I get them. Add the exhaust system, seat and tank..

Before I start it, have to do a complete assembly QC check and make sure all is tight and fastend in the correct order... re check the electrics, time it and add gas then go for the hot button..

One more post before I hit the button... stay tuned.

Here is were we are today..

What Carbs??

"I have ordered mikuni's from Rocky Point... am waiting for Stan to return to the shop. May just have to put on the bings and call it good till I get them. Add the exhaust system, seat and tank.. "

What Carbs are you using???:scratch just interested! thanks;)

Mikuni's arrived!

Don't have to install the Bings..

I have 64/32/11 and 14. They are jetted for the 75/7 and have 2k miles since complete rebuild.
Just doing the mikuni's because I can and I think they look cool.

Maybe will be running by weekend..:lurk

No lights in Berlin!!

So, I continue...
Installed the carbs and carefully routed the cables. All fit well and excitement builds.. next is the exhaust system... but.. wait .... lets plug it in and see if it lights up... so I attach the red to the plus batt side.. then get the voltmeter to see if there is a draw on the negative side... good so far.

Attach the ground.. no smoke observed.. so I grab a key and turn it on and ...
nothing.. no lites...no nothing..// Wrong key... R50 spare.., so ok.. get the the right key... insert, turn..... so nothing again..

So for all my careful work and study...nothing... back to the trace mode.. from the back to the front.. I must have the hot isolated in some way where it goes in to the starter system or to he relay... I will trace and figure it out.. will report back later..

Stay with me..

bike back together, but DOA

Just got my R80 back on the road from a winter servicing. Had the front end off and the forks, new cables, brake lines, etc. All together and dead.... Try this; if the high beam light or turn signal lights work (but no gen, neutral, or oil pressure lights), then its the wiring to the kill switch. My plug had backed out where the handlebar lead goes into the frame plug, your older bike wires to the headlight bucket perhaps? Regardless, if you have hibeam/turn, chase down the kill switch wiring.

Horn, Tank, & Mufflers

That is all there is to go... the will add gas.....

I traced the electrics,,, I started in the middle with the starter relay and traced to the ignition switch.. cleaned and double checked.. cleaned and reinserted... I did not find any thing wrong.. cleaned an re-did the grounds, wiggled wires and made sure the routing and connections were correct... check and double check..

I could not find anything wrong.. I got lights working, high, low, park, tail light, blinks and all is well "then" pod came to life.. I touched the start button and bang,,, engagement.

So,,, what ever,, no electical smoke and Gertie is ready to start electrically at least.

I suspect is was in the starter relay and the connections therein. I have a new relay installed.

I have to install the horn, tank, and mufflers... the add gas and go for the button..

And... side covers!

Tomarrow is the day..... let the tuning begin...

picture to follow.

I added gas...

I double checked.. I looked at it, I had a beer. I kissed my wife. I opened the doors on the shop... I opened the pet cocks, and spun it.. and spun it and spun it.

Nothing.nothing,nothing..

so I pulled the plugs.. I could smell the gas in the tubes.
Checked the spark... none.. so off with the tank and seat..

Power to the coils.. check. disconect the battery... pull the front cover.

Check the points and advance the back plate... recheck and adjust the points.

I leave the cover off.. I don't even put on the tank..I am not optimistic.

What the hell, I try it... BANG,,IT STARTS.

Gertie comes to life.

Back on goes the tank, plug in the gas lines.. re-start and away she goes.
So, I tweek and adjust the running.. The instructions with the Mikuni's is somewhat lacking..but it is running and pretty smooth.. I do the ear tune and balance the system as best I can.

I am a happy guy..... Gertie is taking me to Redmond Oregon right after the 4th of July.. Look me up and announce yourself!

pretty pipes!!

not sure that i care for the white grips :sick

But hey, different strokes for different folks, right? :kiss

Taken with "White"

White is purity! Like the driven snow......

So I add a white fairing, white bags and a white helmet...maybe add my Rotary pin, it will all just blend in.

Like a wise man said.. "consider it, what does it mean".

Besides there is more to "it" than just the "Gripes". (grips)

It has been a satisfying project and it is not over yet... I plan to ride this bike from Ketchikan to Dead Horse to the Panama Canal and back.. or some such.

I will need protection going through Mexico and Central America... I will need at lease 5 other Airheads to join me... any one interested.. ???

On second thought, I may skip Mexico and Central America.. too much Drug Crap!

It could be a continental ride to the Florida Keys and back. I will pick a "good benificial project to support by doing the Ride.

Maybe like support for "Rotary's" drive to iradicate Polio from the world.

visit www.rotary.org

April 2012 to September 2012

Let me know if your interested.. I am going to do this on the Gertie in White.
