Alpinestars Tech Air 5 Plasma

I’ve been wearing a HeLite airbag vest since the fall of ‘22. I chose it because the Alpinestars and Klim vests sold at that time were kinda hot to wear.
Well..Alpinestars just released the Tech Air 5 Plasma, which seems to address the heat issue. Mine was shipped today, it will be here by the 25th.

Same here .. I had the prior tech air 5 - very bulky and with minimal airflow i simply cooked in it. I’m waiting on mine to arrive as well and looking forward to a more comfortable experience.

Looks like great warm-weather protection. I just wish it could still be used when temps drop and the heated jacket liner comes into play, but unfortunately that’s not allowed according to the Plasma’s instructions as the heated gear can exceed the max temp rating (122F).

Best,
DeVern

I have a tech air 5 so will be curious what you guys think once you get it out in warmer weather. Have been happy with it so far, but it does get a little warm. I am kind of skeptical the new one is that much better since it's still a giant air bag/back protector, but fingers crossed.

I have a TechAir 5 and just bought a Dainese Springbok riding suit. Sleeve vents with giant mesh panels front and back ought to help me not get overheated. I added the Dainese underlayers for hot weather, so we'll see how it works.

I'll say one thing: air vests are as required for me as a helmet.

Same. I don't leave home without it. In the summer I wear it over Klim aggressor hot weather base layers and usually an Induction Pro or Induction over the top. On really hot days I try to drag myself out of bed at zero dark thirty so I can be home before the hottest part of the day.

Just got a call that mine is in and being shipped tomorrow morning. Hopefully it's here before Tuesday's trip.

A quick question. With regards to the Alpinestars Tech Air 5 Plasma, can you just replace the canister if it goes off or do you have to send it in to Alpinestar for recharge?

The argon canister can be replaced 6 times by the user before it has to be sent back to Alpinestars…

Looks comfortable.

tech air 5 replacement canisters appear to not be available anywhere at the moment. Alpinestar is out of stock, cycle gear and revzilla out of stock.

I'd be thinking of buying one, but not without at least a spare canister along while riding. Particularly on an extended trip.

Pavement guy, I take it.
Yup! (unless the pavement runs out) 😁

Gravel was never an issue for me until in 2007 when the pavement ended once in mountainous Colorado and turned into 4O miles of fresh, deep gravel. At mile 32, without any of the previous notifications that more weight was needed on the pegs and torque needed adjustment, the bike was suddenly laying down, at 180 degrees to the recent direction. 😱

Ever since, I prefer pavement but I do not avoid gravel if that is where the ride is taking me. In eight years of wearing a Helite vest, there has been no need for it to inflate. 👍

Better than the last system for deployment I researched-

Alpinestars Tech-Air 5 Airbag Vest Review | Rider Magazine

The Alpinestars Tech-Air 5 Plasma airbag system is triggered by a sophisticated algorithm that analyzes sensor data from a tri-axial accelerometer and a tri-axial gyroscope to detect a crash. When a potential impact is detected, an onboard computer triggers the airbag deployment, protecting the rider's chest, back, ribs, and shoulders.

Here's a more detailed explanation:

1. Sensor Data Collection:

  • The system uses six sensors (one tri-axial gyroscope and one tri-axial accelerometer) to continuously monitor the rider's movements.
  • These sensors measure movement in three dimensions: fore and aft, side to side, and up and down.
  • The sensor data is collected at a rate of 1,000 times per second by a micro-computer in the back protector.
2. AI-Driven Algorithm:
  • The onboard computer analyzes the collected sensor data using a sophisticated AI-driven algorithm.

  • This algorithm is designed to identify the specific patterns of movement associated with a crash.

  • It also takes into account the rider's riding mode (Street, Off-Road, Race) to optimize the deployment timing.
3. Airbag Deployment:
  • When the algorithm detects a potential impact, it triggers the airbag deployment in less than 60 milliseconds.

  • The system uses a replaceable gas canister (argon gas) to inflate the airbag.

  • The airbag provides protection to the rider's chest, ribs, back, and shoulders.
4. User Interface:

  • The system is activated by zipping up the vest and closing the magnetic flap.
  • An LED display indicates the system's operational status.
  • The system also has Bluetooth connectivity and a smartphone app for easy management and firmware updates.
  • The Tech-Air app can be used to check the system's status, battery status, and ride analysis

Since the airbag is in addition to my gear I was already using it doesn't really make sense to wait until extra canisters are available.
If I have a deployment on a long trip I'm hopefully better off because I had it, and if I'm continuing the ride without it I'm in the same gear I'd be wearing if I was waiting to buy the airbag with extra canisters.

To those that use this...is all this tech really rated as CE Level 1???
